How to Have Fun Like Hawaiin Hawaiians in Oahu, Hawaii! Make a Headdress and More!
Are you ready to have fun in Hawaii! How can you say or either think about Hawaii and not instantly think fun? The two are synonomous with each other!
Visit the Hawaiian Islands on your Hawaii vacation
Visiting the beautiful Hawaiian Islands is like being in paradise and is a truly dream vacation. In fact, some people enjoy Hawaii so much when they visit while vacationing or some other reason --many return to make Hawaii their home. Truly a home in paradise.
Once you see with your own eyes how beautiful the state of Hawaii is, you will want to return again and again to see and experience more of its beauty.
Beautiful Hawaii vacation
Hawaii is made up of several islands, including the island of Hawaii as well as the largest populated island, Oahu, which means "gathering place." You can read a lot of literature about Hawaii before your trip, to find out more about the state, especially, now since you actually plan to be there. Go online or pick up Hawaii books and magazines at stores before your trip or even just before you board the plane. You can make yourself notes to visit the scenic shorelines of beaches that are featured as suggested places to visit in Hawaii -- just like I did.
Where and how do you have fun in Oahu? There is so much to do and enjoy in Hawaii, it will take books to try to tell you even half of all there is to do and enjoy! There are numerous books and articles about Hawaii, some of which I've listed below for you should you want to learn even more about Hawaii.
There are lots of fun and exciting things to do in Oahu. Check online and elsewhere for the current schedules and prices for any of the events I will talk about here. There is a wealth of information on Hawaii to enrich your knowledge of these beautiful tropical islands.
Flights to Oahu for your Hawaii vacation
There are flights to Hawaii that will fit your schedule. Once you decide you would like to really experience Hawaii, check your airlines schedules to book your flight. It doesn't matter what time of the year you plan to go, beautiful Hawaii's pleasant weather awaits to welcome you.
You may have to get used to seeing people wearing summer outfits and shorts in the cold months, like January for instance. After your first shock or surprise at the beautiful weather, you can embark on buying outfits specifically made for Hawaii -- outfits with that Hawaiian look and feel to suit Hawaiian weather. Ladies, don't forget to put a flower in your hair and make sure the flower is either on the right or left, depending upon if you are married or single. Guys, remember to sport at least one, if not more, a tropical Hawaiian shirt.
When you reach Hawaii, you will be greeted with pleasant weather and friendly tourists and native Hawaiians. If it ever rains in Hawaii while you are there, be happy in the knowledge that the rain never lasts long and sometimes within minutes the sunshine and blue skies will return.
Scheduling your Hawaii vacation
Due to scheduling considerations, you may not be able to go and see all the places and fun things to do on your Hawaii list. So I will only discuss some of what you may be able to do if you stay in Hawaii for just a few days. You may decide you would like to do and enjoy some of these things. I recommend that you add to your list do even more enjoyable things in Hawaii, sometimes out of the fun of being spontaneous.
Start your Hawaii vacation fun with a Luau!
Experiencing a Luau is one of the most amazing aspects in experiencing Hawaii culture. First, you can partake of their native drinks before the luau starts with a blast. Walking on the grass at the Luau can be challenging if you wear heels (like I did), so your heels may sink deep in the grass -- depending of course of where you attend the Luau. But I not only survived but thrived in my complete enjoyment of the Luau atmosphere -- and so can you. You may even get to take a picture with one of the handsome Hawaiian dancers (again, like I did).
Before dinner, there are usually mini contests, for example some of the guests may be requested to dun grass skirts and do the hula to Hawaiian music. How fun and hilarious that will be, since the most unlikely people are asked to dance the hula.
You will see Hawaiian headdresses being made and will even be able to make a Hawaiian headdress of your own, if you so choose.
Then on to a delicious authentic Hawaiian meal! The dish will look like it is right out of a magazine, so of course feel free to take pictures of it before you delve into its deliciousness. Yes-- i did take a lot of pictures!
Next came the show. This may be the first time you see guys dance the hula, and it is interesting, in my opinion, to see how they danced with their legs bending musically out and in to the beat of the music. The guys danced with and alongside the gorgeous Hawaiian female dancers that graced the stage next.
All types of talented singing acts are featured. There was an exception of a singing gentleman who reminded me of a Vegas act instead of singing suitable for beauiful Hawaii. I was glad when the next act started. And what an act it was! I had never seen a fire dance before, where guys actually dance while throwing and swirling batons that have fire on both ends. Just amazing! Because of your overall joy about actually being in Hawaii, you may leave saying that there were no parts of the luau that you did not thoroughly enjoy.
To make a long story short, make sure you attend a luau while in Hawaii!
Enjoy an Outdoor fair event during your Hawaii vacation!
There are no guarantees a fair event will be available when you visit Hawaii. I think the one I went to was a special fair that occurs about the same time of the year, each year. However, the way things quickly change, you never know when and if there will be such an event when you visit Hawaii.
You may, of course, surf the web, and other sources to see if there are any fairs, or other outdoor gatherings scheduled when you visit. On this part of the trip, you can examine all the offering of the outdoor vendors, which sometimes include lots of seashell type jewelry and hand made bracelets made out of rope and leather material. This seems to be a big draw of the crowd, because people would stand around the vendor and watch intently as he handmade the bracelets. They are a little pricey, but only because they are handmade. There will be lots to see, including a stage of hula dancers, dancing for your entertainment pleasure!
Visit the Polynesian Culture Center during your Hawaii vacation
This center is located on the outskirts of Oahu. Depending on where you are, you may have to drive a ways to get to the center, but the drive will be really worth it! You can drive down a street located adjacent to the beautiful blue Hawaiian waters. It is sometimes difficult to get lost in Hawaii, but feel free to use your GPS is needed.
From your vehicle, you canlook to your right and see nothing but a wide spanse of sky blue water, with white waves crashing on the shore under a clear blue, beautiful Hawaiian sky! It's an absolutely stunning sight!
Enough about the drive you say? Ok, on to the Polynesian Culture Center.
When you walk in the center, it may appear to be a regular shopping center with the only difference being there are a lot of Hawaii items for sale. Well you will be happily wrong. There is a shopping center section area in front, but this center had so much more.
There is a lot more to the center than initially meets the eye!
For instance, you can sign up to see a live full production Hawaiian show, located in the Polynesian Center.
If you walk further into the open area within the palm tree lined center, you will see various exhibits celebrating Hawaii and its rich history and culture. Make it a point to visit the sometimes standing room only center that was labeled Hawaii.
This is where you can find out more about the hula -- for instance, did you know that the hula is not an Hawaiian dance? The hula is actually a Tahitian originated dance, of which Hawaii had no part. Interesting huh?
Even more Interesting is Hawaii does have a native dance. The graceful dancer on stage will raise her hands and move her fingers around melodically, as she dances, making little steps back and forth in her bare feet , her ankles adorned with leaves as ankle bracelets. She will explain that Hawaiins use their fingers to indicate different animals and meanings. There is almost nothing more touching during an Hawaiian visit like hearing the history of Hawaiian dance from an actual Hawaiian dancer! Do not be surprised if you are thoroughly impressed!
And you cannot leave out the magnificent palm trees. In fact, during your walk around the area, one of the events you will see is tree climbing by one of the natives. You will be amazed at how high and quickly the climber goes up the bark of the palm tree. Another must see in Hawaii!
Now on with the Show during your Hawaii vacation!
And what a show it will be! The colorful production during the time I went was the Story of Hai -- which means "Breath of Life", where island dancers consisting of Hawaiian, Fiji, Tahitian,Tongas, and others chronicle the birth of a son, destined and trained for greatness. The dancing and background scenery were absolutely breathtaking, and even though the cast was singing in their native tongue, you could understand the story by the dancing alone! I also got a chance to shake some of the dancers' hands after the show! When you go, if this show is not scheduled, be assured that another equally amazing show will be playing.
After you leave the show, visit stores where you can buy Hawaiian sovenirs. I had to deliberate about if I should buy a DVD of the show I had just seen, mainly because of the cost. Then I thought --Now when will you be in Hawaii again? A trip to Hawaii is not like an every day trip to the mall! So that's how I sold myself on buying the DVD, and I'm so glad I did. Anytime I want to go back to my beautiful Hawaiian days, I watch the DVD and relive the magic! I recommend that you do the same. Go ahead and buy a DVD of the show you have just seen if one is available. This DVD will not be the actual show you have just seen, but one that was recorded previously, which is very much like re-watching the actual show.
To summarize how much I love the Polynesian Cultural Center, I actually stayed until they closed! I didn't want to miss a minute!
Going back to Hawaii for your vacation?
Hopefully, one day you will be able to return to Hawaii and pick up where you left out from your first visit. And who knows! If I've convinced you that Hawaii is a vacation worthy of your valuable time, maybe we will meet along the beautiful beaches of Hawaii, and give each other a knowing wink and I can say to you -- Welcome to Hawaii!
Someone asked me when I returned how did I feel while I was in Hawaii. I said ecstactically, "I felt like I was in a dream!"
