Heathrow Airport Car Rental

Updated on April 25, 2011

London Heathrow Overview

London Heathrow Airport is a large sprawling airport with five terminals (T1 through T5). It is some 17 miles (27 km) west of central London a large part of the journey can be made via the M4 motorway which can be quite congested at peak periods. Terminal 5 can be reached directly from the M25. The airport is also near the M40 and M3.London heathrow is the busiest airport in the world for international passenger traffic and is Europe's leading hub airport. Terminal 5 opened on 27 March 2008 and has started lots of changes in respect of which terminal serves which airline. The changes will be gradual with some BA flights will not moving to T5 until late in 2010.

Car Rental at Heathrow Airport

There are 8 car hire companies on site at London Heathrow airport. You can book your car on arrival at Heathrow airport at the car rrental desks, but for the best deals and access to the best discounts you should book before you arrive at the airport. I find the easeiest way is to book online but you can book over the phone or go into your local car rental dealers and ask them to book you a car.

Due to the limited space available at Heathrow Airport all the car rental companies keep their rental cars off the airport in the surrounding area. All Heathrow car rental agencies will collect you at the terminal arrivals pick up area, which should be signposted, and drive you to the rental car collection point. This short drive should not take more than 5 to 10 minutes on a normal day but if the traffic is bad it could take much longer. Car Rental desks are situated in the arrivals area in all five terminals and they will assist you if you require help, but you don't get the keys to your rental car until you arrive at the off airport rental car parking area.

At the end of your car rental just bring the car back to the same place as you collected it and the car rental company will once again give you a lift back to the airport, this may take some time so allow for it when planning the journey.

Many of the companies will also provide one way rentals but often include an extra charge for this.

If you are traveling to Heathrow and are thinking about renting a car on arrival I hope that this has helped and that you enjoy driving around England and the UK and have a pleasant car rental experience. Don't forget to drive on the left as you leave the airport.
