Hidden Zoo in Puget Sound - Cougar Mountain Zoo in Issaquah, Washington

Updated on January 12, 2015

I believe many of us in the Seattle-Tacoma area are unaware of a cute little gem of a zoo tucked in the hills on the outskirts of Issaquah, a quick drive.

This fun zoo features some of the most upclose animal exhibits available in the Puget Sound region. Step inside to a large cougar exhibit, and find the tucked away tiger corner with massive white and orange tigers staring at you from three feet away. Listen to the calls of wild lemurs, find the sanctuary for over a hundred parrots, visit the reindeer, deer, alapacas, cranes, emus, wallabys, and other large birds. Enjoy the view over Lake Sammamish while you walk in the animal statue garden. A fun trip for kids and worth the short drive.

This zoo features four large Bengal tigers of the same family, two orange, and two white. Bengal tigers are some of the largest of the tiger species. The tiger exhibit allows close-up viewing from multiple angles.

The zoo also features several cougars, or mountain lions, in an open environment filled with logs and rocks.

Several cute alpacas roam on the side of a hill and love for you to feed them. Some of them are quite goofy characters.

The lemurs gather to make loud screaming chants, as is typical of this type of monkey.

Handsome Tiggers! Like the puma pictures (almost cuddly, but I'd get my hand ripped off before I got anywhere near).

We have had a few local zoos [that were] shut down as laws were tightened on keeping animals. In a bigger country there's more space of course. Nowhere here's more than 75 miles from the sea and a lot of that is built up. However there are wildlife parks such as at Woburn, and in some areas there are wild boar on the loose in woodland.

A landowner is Scotland has plans to bring in wolves that would roam his lands. Farmers in the area are not too happy, as their stock is mostly sheep, so he'd have to install a high fence to keep them in.

Been here almost 20 years and never heard of this place. Spent many years going back and forth to Issaquah as well as going to Cougar Mountain Park many times (Newcastle side). Great article. I need to check it out. Thx. Voted up and shared.
