High Falls of the Cheat Info and Postcards

Cheryl has lived in West Virginia for over thirty years. She likes sharing about her area and the places that she's been in the state.

The High Falls can be seen via a scenic train ride from Elkins, West Virginia.

Nestled in a valley in the central eastern part of West Virginia is a small town by the name of Elkins. We hadn't given it much thought as a vacation destination spot. We had been there before when our daughter was in middle school and was on the cross country team. One of the meets was held in Elkins.

We did a drive down to Elkins, went to the cross country meet, had some lunch, and headed back home.

Then one day, my husband and I were watching a PBS special on scenic trains. Lo and behold, they also featured a scenic train ride that departed from Elkins, West Virginia. I started checking out the information online, and found out it was worth visiting again.

These are some of the same scenes that I saw.

The main reason we went was for the train ride.

There are several types of train rides to choose from. The train that we rode on is called the New Tygart Flyer. We took the lunch trip, which is approximately four hours for the round trip.

It includes the train ride to the High Falls of the Cheat with lunch on the way, a stop at the falls that last around 35 - 45 minutes, and the ride back to Elkins with cookies for dessert.

There are also short morning train rides, dinner trains; some of them featuring a murder mystery while on board, and also a special rides for the time of the year.

There are Polar Express rides in November and December, where the kids get to wear their pajamas, and sometimes the adults do too.

I think they also have special rides for Easter as well.

Visiting the High Falls of the Cheat is part of several train rides.

Compared to Niagara Falls, they are what one would call mini. However, the views were very nice. We got to view the falls from both below, and from above.

Not all of the trains go as far as the High Falls, but quite a few do. You can take shorter excursions that are only around an hour long.

We took the four hour round trip, and there is also a longer trip that also stops at the High Falls and then continues on for couple of hours or so before heading back, for a nine hour round trip.

The view of the falls was awesome.

I liked getting a view with the a tree branch included.

We got to get out and walk down to the Falls.

There are stairs that are built into the hillside, so that tourists can walk down to the falls.

There are rocks that you can walk out on; sometimes you have to be careful of your footing.

I was admiring the reflections in the pools of water that were at the top of the falls.

I took quite a few pictures, but didn't notice the butterfly in the rocks until I was browsing through the photos on my camera.

The water right before the falls didn't appear to be going all that fast.

What else is there to do in Elkins, WV?

Besides a variety of choices of train rides, there are choices of a couple of variety shows to see. The show that we went to was the one at the American Mountain Theater. It has music, jokes, and funny stories. The show itself was entertaining and enjoyable. Though at the end, they did a little bit of sermonizing. They could have saved that for Sunday.

On Wednesday night, we drove over to the nearby park and listened to various players of blue grass and fiddle music. This was free and open to the public. You can check the Davis and Elkins College for their event schedule.

We drove down to Beverly, WV and visited a civil war museum. I've seen other civil war museums elsewhere, and it was interesting to see the perspective of what took place in that area of West Virginia.

There are also some caverns that people can tour, that are about an hours driving distance from Elkins. We had seen caverns many years ago, and decided not to do that this trip, though they are pretty magnificent too.

Where to stay in Elkins, WV.

There are several chain brand hotels in the area and smaller ones too. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express which is real convenient to the train depot and the American Mountain Theater.

You can get to both of these attractions by just walking across the parking lot, crossing the road, and walking across another parking lot.

There's also a new hotel, that is close by, that is being built and is supposed to open in fall of 2014.

The train depot is in Elkins, WV. It is right across from the American Mountain Theater.

Where to eat in and near Elkins...

If you're looking for something close to the train depot, then I recommend C. J. Maggie's. They serve a variety of sandwiches and other items too. My favorite is the portabella mushroom sub. Yum.

There is a steakhouse on the outskirts of town, heading south, down route 219. There was enough vegetable choices on the buffet that this vegetarian was quite happy with.

If you're looking for some place special, then I recommend the Forks Inn. It is about 3-4 miles outside of Elkins, and sits on top of a mountain. The views are spectacular and the food was great. My husband and I both got different pasta dishes and we were both impressed. I'm a vegetarian and asked that there be not meat in mine, and they were very accommodating. We got to sit outside and enjoy the view, and they lit up portable heaters for the cool night air.

I really enjoyed learning about that area of the country. Your photos as well as the video were informative and pretty. Thanks! I have only been on a couple of train rides. One between Houston and Galveston and the other in Canada from Vancouver to Squamish. I wrote a hub about that last one. Will share this with my followers.
