Highlights Of The Annual South Florida Fair

Updated on March 1, 2013

Each year the South Florida Fair held in West Palm Beach, Florida hosts over 500,000 people annually. The event provides people of all ages with great entertainment, thrilling rides, themed and livestock exhibits and other exhilarating attractions. The midway features foods from all over the world popular with today's fair-goers.

The fair began over 100 years ago and has moved from the International Airport location to the Palm Beach State College campus to the present Fairgrounds location. Today the fair covers 100 acres of land and takes the average patron a half day to thoroughly enjoy all the activity.

My husband and I attend at least one day during the 17 day run of the South Florida Fair. We have always enjoyed the multiple artisan displays, as well as the shows which bring in talented musicians and artists.

The traditional ferris wheel is still a major attraction and the waiting line is one of the longest each day. The midway has plenty of food options. It may take you awhile to decide upon what to eat. Don't forget to try the fried pickles! The Class Car exhibit displays quite an impressive selection of hot rods, sports cars and antique vehicles. The colors, flags, music and lights are all part of the venue's pull on patrons. Ice cream in many flavors is hard to resist! The game booths do not always produce a winner, but the challenge is just as fun. Musicians and performers are a top attraction each day. Florida's Emily Brooke is a new singing sensation that has a voice similar to Taylor Swift. The magic acts of Henry Wade are an annual delight for fair visitors.

A Tribute To Our Nation's Capital

The Expo Hall displays a themed event such as this year's Nation's Capital. We toured the oval office, boarded Air Force One and viewed famous photographs of past presidents and our current President Obama and family. We enjoyed the many monuments replicated, such as the Washington Monument and the detailed sand architecture of the Lincoln Memorial.

As we toured this area we felt as if we were given a mini-tour of our capital and the highlights of our nation. It was an outstanding exhibit and we came away better informed on the history of our nation.

The exhibit also featured a tribute to the Jewish Holocaust Museum. We were humbled and awed at the stamina of the people who endured the many years of tribulation. Equally admirable, was the hope and strength the Jewish people built through the years. The miniature displays, video stories and photographs were definitely inspiring.

What a Treat!

Fried pickles are popular at most fairs, and South Florida doesn't disappoint anyone on this tasty food choice! The enormous pile of home-made ribbon fries accompanied by a tasty corn dog are favorite fair meals. Don't forget the famous funnel cake. This one topped with cherries and sprinkled with powdered sugar is to die for! The Texas Beef Brisket is hard to top here at the South Florida Fair. This is always on our list before heading home.

The Food!

What can be more exiting than eating at a fair? Everything imaginable is available from sweets to main meals. Favorite food choices are the Texas Beef Brisket, Chicken Gyros, Roasted Corn, Kettle Corn and the old fashioned Corn Dog.

We never leave without indulging in a funnel cake oozing with cherries and covered in powdered sugar. Another great treat is the fried pickle. Many people have not had the opportunity to taste one of these delectable food morsels and do not know what they are missing. Trust me, it is one of the most flavorful, tart delights around.

Location and Trivia

If you go next year, this popular West Palm Beach event is held on the South Florida Fairgrounds and is located on the intersection of State Route 441 and and Fairground Road. It runs in late January and into February some years, with total event days approximately seventeen.

It is open from noon until midnight most days, and offers people many opportunities to hear popular musicians, talented local artists, view military vehicles and livestock. It also has a simulated pioneer village "Yester Year" that holds daily events like the reenactment of an old west gunfight battle. You will truly enjoy your visit!
