Historical Del Mar

Updated on May 14, 2014

Hollywood's Beach Playground

In 1882 a New Yorker named Theodore Loop came to southern California to build a railroad connecting Los Angeles and San Diego. The original train tracks were laid down in the middle of Del Mar.

Del Mar became a Hollywood entertainment vacation destination long before the Del Mar Racetrack was built in 1937. Known as "Where The turf Meets the Surf," actors Bing Crosby, Jimmy and Marge Durante and Lucy and Desi Arnaz frequented this track to watch Seabiscuit race and legendary jockey Willie Shoemaker win many races.

The tradition for Opening Day is to wear flamboyant hats to parties and win the contests. The track races from July to September.

Many who visited Del Mar stayed at the historic grand Stratford Inn, built in 1909. It had a saltwater plunge swimming pool, a power house to provide power and warm water and a garage.

Today it's the L'Auberge Del Mar's offering over 100 guest rooms and luxury suites. Each room has either views of Del Mar village or the Pacific Ocean.

The rooms were renovated in 2008 and offer plush bedding, a sitting area with a couch that folds out to a bed, lovely marble bathroom with a huge walk-in shower and signature bath amenities, high-speed Internet access, in room coffee, 42” LCD flat screen television and bathrobes during your stay.

The full service 5,000 square foot beach-themed spa includes 10 treatment rooms, a couple's suite and lovely outdoor relaxation lounging area.

Two restaurants and a very popular bar lounge keep guests from going into the Village for a meal. Open for breakfast, lunch and romantic dinners is Kitchen 1540. Outdoor patio dining is offered at the resort's Waterfall Terrace restaurant overlooking the heated pool.

Within two blocks is miles of sandy beach to walk, jog or run along the water's edge.
