Because this San Francisco event is rather challenging, it is not recommended for first time triathletes. The Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon includes a 1.5-mile swim, an 18-mile bike ride, and an 8-mile run. The swim takes place right off of the infamous Alcatraz Island.

In 1962, when Alcatraz was still operating as a prison, three men planned a very detailed escape. Inmates John Anglin, Clarence Anglin, and Frank Morris entered the waters off the island and were never seen again. Authorities said the three drowned as they tried to escape. Others say the men made it to mainland.

While it may never be known what happened to those men, participants in this San Francisco Event can swim in those same waters as they take part in the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon.

Festival Village opens the day before the race. It is during the festival that participants can pick up their race packets and attend the athletes meeting. Participants can also attend a seminar where they will get pointers from a top athlete.

One reason this San Francisco Event is so popular, aside from its affiliation with the infamous former prison, is the gorgeous scenery that participants will enjoy as they bike and run the course. The lovely San Francisco weather is yet another bonus.

People come from around the country to take part in the Event, and others come as spectators. During a visit, there is plenty to do and see. Visitors can enjoy the fabulous San Francisco Dining and Shopping or spend a day exploring popular Attractions such as the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman's Wharf, and Alctraz Island.

Participation is limited to 2,000, so this year's San Francisco Event is full. By joining with a charity team, it is still possible to take part in the 2016 triathlon. Information about joining a charity team is available on the Event's website.

Those who are registered will need to find a nearby San Francisco Hotel, and Hotel Union Square is a perfect choice.
