Old Trafford

Old Trafford is the home of Manchester United, one of the most successful and most popular soccer clubs in the world. With a capacity of almost 80,000 the football stadium is the biggest club stadium in the country. Only Wembley stadium is bigger but that's home to the England national team rather than a soccer club. Over the last few years more and more visitors to Old Trafford come from other countries including China, Australia and Malaysia. Visitors don't just visit on match days though: the Old Trafford Museum and Tour, as well as the clubs official merchandise store, is open all year round and is a must-see attraction for any visitor to Manchester.

Old Trafford stadium is approx 3.5 miles outside Manchester City Centre. Drive via the A56 or take the tram to either the Old Trafford or Pomona stops

Nearest Hotel - Victoria Warehouse Hotel

The nearest hotel to Old Trafford at a distance of only 0.2 miles is the Victoria Warehouse hotel. However, whilst this is literally a stones throw away from the where United play don't be expecting any wonderful views across to the stadium: many of the rooms in this hotel do not have external windows. This is a former goods warehouse used during the former glory days of the Manchester Ship Canal when this area was a booming docklands with cargo regular coming and going up the canal that links Manchester to the Atlantic Ocean. It's a decent hotel with decent traveller reviews and if it's Old Trafford you want then you won't get much closer than to the action than this. A one-night stay in the Victoria Warehouse hotel on a match-day will likely cost around £100 for a double/twin.

It's got easy access to Manchester City Centre via an array of public transport options and is only one mile away from the Manchester Phone4U arena which has nightly concerts by some of the biggest acts in the world. Ibis Hotel, Salford Quays

This is the real budget option as room prices during the week can be as little as £20 per night. However, even in this no frills hotel you can still expect to pay around £90 for a stay during a Manchester United home match. This hotel fronts Trafford Road, a busy 4-lane road. There are plenty of amenities in the area including bars, restaurants and convenience stores and it has excellent public transport links as it's only a 2-minute walk to the Exchange Quay tram stop. At 05 miles away from Old Trafford this hotel is only a 20 minute walk from the stadium. The rooms are bright and airy and finished to a modern standard with flat screen TV and private shower room. If you book here be sure to enter the right hotel as there's a Ramada hotel next door that looks very similar to this one!

Ramada Hotel, Salford Quays

Located right next to the Ibis Hotel on Trafford Road, the Ramada shares all the same local amenities as its neighbour including excellent public transport links and access to bars and restaurants. But the Ramada is a slightly more upmarket option than the the more budget-conscious Ibis. The hotel has 142 rooms all with satellite TV with movies on-demand; complimentary toiletries and tea and coffee making facilities; as well as its own bar and restaurant; and 24 hour room service. A room on Manchester United match day will cost between £105 to £145 for a double/twin. But be quick as this hotel is often fully booked on match days.

Here I give you two more options but this time in Manchester City Centre. I'll give you one budget option and one top-class option. Let's start with the budget option.

Crowne Plaza Manchester City Centre

This wonderful 4-star hotel is located in the cool and creative Northern Quarter in the northern part of Manchester City Centre. The hotel is close to many public transport links and interchanges including tram, train and bus. It is also only a 5-10 minute walk from the Manchester Phones4U arena and less then 10 minutes from some of the best shopping areas in the city including Harvey Nichols, Selfridges and the House of Fraser department stores. The Lowry Hotel

At the upper end of the spectrum is the Lowry Hotel, Manchester's premier 5-star hotel and preferred choice of visiting soccer clubs and international pop stars. The Lowry occupies a stunning riverside location just a couple of minutes walk from Deansgate, one of the major thoroughfares through Manchester City Centre. The Lowry offers 5-star luxury at its best but still provides an unpretentious homely approach to its guests. The restaurant offers meals of the highest quality and there is an excellent luxury spa facility inside the hotel. A stay in the Lowry during a Manchester United home match will cost around £200 per night for a standard room. The hotel isn't so well serviced to public transport links as other parts of the city but at less than 3 miles from Old Trafford it will be a relatively inexpensive ride in a taxi.
