How Hurricanes Are Named

Have you ever wondered how do they come up with that crazy name for a Hurricane? If your name is Katrina I’m sure you’ve heard your fair share of jokes! So how do they do it? Well, Tropicalstorms are the ones that get the names first and then these develop into Hurricanes. The first Tropicalstorm of the year begins with the letter A, the next one begins with the letter B and the other one after with the letter C… Do you see the pattern here? Currently we are at Hurricane Igor, that means we have had NINE Tropicalstorms! Remember not all Tropicalstorms turn into Hurricanes.

There are 6 different groups of names that switch every year. When there is a Hurricane that causes tremendous damage, that name is taken off the list and replaced with another one. Therefore, you will never see another Hurricane Katrina! Good for you if your name is Katrina!
