Its carnival time in somerset

Updated on October 20, 2011

November is nearly upon us and so is Carnival. Down here in Somerset November brings carnival, a celebration dating back to 1605 where the inhabitants of Bridgwater started to commemorate Guy Fawkes’ attempt to blow up the houses of parliament and this is where each year the carnival begins and other the following nights travel to six other towns throughout north Somerset.

Dates and venues for 2011;

Bridgwater CarnivalFriday 4th November
North PethertonCarnivalSaturday 5th November
Burnham-On-SeaCarnivalMonday 7th November
Shepton Mallett CarnivalWednesday 9th November
WellsCarnivalFriday 11th November
GlastonburyCarnivalSaturday 12th November
Weston Super MareCarnivalMonday 14th November

Over this period of time many of the towns the carnival visits celebrate by holding free firework displays, street entertainment, arts etc.

There are over one hundred floats on display ranging from little pick up vehicles accompanied by walkers, right up to 100ft floats of varying shapes and sizes and are a credit to the many carnival clubs who have spent many hours raising the money and constructing the visual feasts of light and pulsating sound. Interestingly each float can be up to 16ft high and 11ft wide and many have as many as 30,000 light bulbs to illuminate them.

Many thousands of people travel from all over the country and overseas to experience the razzmatazz of the Somerset carnival and it is said that so bright is the procession it can be seen from space.

Everything is done by the local towns to make the experience a pleasure in terms of parking and facilities and local shops stay open later to accommodate anybody with shopping in mind and there are many refreshment stalls along the route.

It is well worth the visit - you are sure to be amazed!

Please check out my pictures, all of which were taken at Burnham on Sea 2010.
