Juyongguan Great Wall of China
The Juyongguan section of the Great Wall of China is the closest section of the Wall near Beijing (just a bit closer than Badaling) but it is also one of the most beautiful, with a very steep ascent and a section that crosses over a reservoir. Juyongguan also tends to be less crowded than the more popular Badaling, which makes it a nice alternative for visiting one of the most accessible sections of the Great Wall near Beijing. Another attractive feature of the Juyongguan Great Wall is the Yuntai (Cloud Platform) Terrace, an ornately carved base made of white marble that was first constructed during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368 A.D.), which was founded by Kublai Khan, the grandson of Genghis Khan. The Yuntai Terrace has had a tremendous history of having beautiful architecture built on top of it, including the original three pagodas which were burnt down during the transition from the Yuan to the Ming Dynasty, then a Buddhist temple and another temple, each of which were also destroyed leaving only the platform itself remaining. Yuntai Terrace has beautiful carved images on the sides and inside the tunnel running through it that makes it a must-see on a visit to the Juyongguan Great Wall. Its proximity to Beijing makes it easy to visit on a half-day Beijing tour or a full-day tour in combination with a Ming Tombs tour. On the downside, it can be very crowded (and probably best avoided during Chinese holidays such as the National Day holiday on October 1 every year), but it is still a great place to take your Great Wall tour while visiting Beijing.
