Benefits of Cycling
Cycling is a great exercise which is fun and very good for us. There are so many benefits from cycling and it’s not just health benefits. We could all save some serious amount of money if we cycled to work each day or to our local shops. Our petrol costs would come down which in turn would lead to less mileage which would lower our insurance costs. Also the less we use our cars the less we would have to spend on service and maintenance. You don’t need a licence to ride a cycle and you don’t have the maintenance costs, just a few inner tubes to buy every now and then.
How about on holiday? When it comes to touring a city like London getting on a bike is the easiest thing to do. You will see a lot more in one day than you would on a bus or in a car. London is one big traffic jam and the only way to see it is to get on a bike. As well as seeing a lot more of the city, you will also be benefiting from some great exercise.

Barclays Cycle Hire: How it works
Barclays Cycle Hire
Cycling is being encouraged by cities as they are now adding bike lanes to major roads. In London there is a cycle hire scheme run by Barclays which is available for 24 hours a day. You don’t need to book, you just need to run up at one of the 570 docking stations with a Visa or MasterCard and follow the on screen instructions.

The Cycle Scheme
The Cyclescheme is the UK’s leading provider of tax-free bikes for work. The scheme is run in strict accordance to the government’s green travel plan and conforms to the requirements of the HMRC, OFT and DfT.
They offer employees a way to get bikes tax free which is saving about half the cost. The scheme is completely free to join, all you have to do is register here.
Once employers have signed up they will be given access to their online system.

London Bike Tours
Nothing beats touring London on a bike. As well as keeping fit and healthy you will also get to see a lot more of the city than if you were to take a bus tour.
There are so many lovely green parks in London and the only way to see them is either by walking or cycling. With cycling you get to see a lot more and have fun along the way.
You can use the Barclays Cycle Hire and go off and expore on your own but if you want a guided tour there are companies that tailor just this.
Mind the Gap Tours offer a couple of great bike tours. They do a Windsor Castle Bike Tour which starts at London Padding station and after a short train ride the bike tour begins. The bike tour is pretty much flat and is traffic free. It takes you on an 8 mile tour of the country side down lanes and designated bike tracks. Once in Windsor you get off your bikes and have some lunch before going on a short tour of the town and Castle.
The also offer a Hampton Court Bike tour which starts at Waterloo train station and takes you on a tour of Hampton Court Palace and the historic town of Richmond. The video below tells you all about it.

You will burn calories and tone up all over and feel great in the process. Those that haven’t ridden a bike since they were younger will find it hard work at first, especially going up hills, but each subsequent time you ride you will find it easier. If your determined and keep at it you will soon be cycling up hills and not having to get off and push.
