Introduction to Poitou Charentes

The Poitou Charentes region is located on the Atlantic coast - in fact, in the middle section of this coast! You can enjoy lovely sandy beaches from La Rochelle down to the Gironde Estuary. There is a sunny micro-climate on this coast similar to the Mediterranean coast - so expect long sunny summers.

To the north is the Loire Valley and the Pays de la Loire region. To the east the land-locked region of Limousin, and on the southern flanks the Aquitaine region. The region is split into smaller areas called departments: Charente, Charente-Maritime, Deux-Sevres and Vienne.
The Charente-Maritime is along the coast.

Poitou-Charentes is very popular with visitors - among the highlights are the chic 'holiday island' of Ile-de-Ré and the fascinating and active port of La Rochelle, or head inland to discover the sunflower fields & vineyards plus the quiet villages of the region.

Pretty Villages of the region and islands: Ars-en-Ré and La Flotte-en-Ré, the 'most beautiful village' at Talmont-sur-Gironde, Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, and Nouaille-Maupertuis. In the Deux-Sevres you must visit the Marais-Poitevin - a large region of canals and marshes, best explored on a boat hired from one of the nearby towns. In Vienne head for the attractive boulevards and cafes of Poitiers and the nearby Futuroscope (see below).

Charente Maritime is a very popular destination among both french and overseas visitors - highlights: La Rochelle and Ile de Re island. Spend some time on the beaches at Royan, a popular seaside resort, the lovely resort and zoo at La Palmyre, a little north from Royan; and also Meschers-sur-Gironde. In the Charente, the main town is Cognac, and visits to the very many Cognac distilleries is pleasant experience! Also visit Angouleme and the pretty town of Confolens.

Property is expensive on the coast but inland rural properties are much cheaper. Many Brits enjoy the lifestyle with mild winters and long sunny summers as rural Poitou Charentes properties are much cheaper!
