Madeira Portugal

Updated on September 19, 2013

The beautiful island of volcanic origin has more than 200 years’ experience of high quality service and comfort. The island was discovered in 1420 by the Portuguese navigator João Gonçalves Zarco. Since then, the island has always run through the path of the caravels on their way in search of new lands in the East. It is officially among the list of of the top places to visit in Portugal.

Madeira has everything to fascinate you: subtropical climate, magnificent nature, abundance of exotic flowers and fruits, grapes, brought once from Cyprus and Crete, and of course hotels that add Madeira to the list of the best resorts in the world!

Funchal (Madeira) is an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean and its main island. The archipelago consists of two inhabited islands, Madeira and Porto Santo, and two groups of uninhabited islands Desertas and Selvagens. The archipelago is located 1000 km from the capital city of Portugal - Lisbon, 700 km west of the coast of Africa and Casablanca, 600 km off the coast of Morocco.

5 reasons to visit the island of Madeira:

Madeira Island is one of the few places in the world that should be visited at least once in your life. Imagine that summer here lasts all year round. The island is a place where you really understand the meaning of the words "Paradise on Earth".

Madeira is impressive, especially its nature. The steep cliffs overhanging the ocean, swimming pools, carved rocks, irrigation canals and Levada" meandering among the mountains is a must visit place for walking if you want to enjoy breathtaking scenery.

Vacation in Madeira is "complete relaxation", surrounded by beautiful nature silence. The island attracts by its crystal blue waters and incredibly pure air and amazing spirit that makes you think you can fly. It's easy to forget about time and reality: Madeira gives you sort of welcome relaxation.

Madeira is known as a resort for nearly 200 years. This tropical island, surrounded by flowers, smelling exotic fruit and honey was once a closed place that could only be visited by noble and wealthy people. Now it is open to everybody, those who are here to enjoy comfort can try magnificent SPA and thalassotherapy centers.

Madeira is a great place for a range of sports, the island offers excellent conditions for walking, sailing, scuba diving, surfing, dolphin watching and whale watching, sailing mountaineering, golf and tennis, horseback riding. Ones of my very favorite are trips to Levada (ancient irrigation channels), these tours go along the mountain slopes through the residual forest to waterfalls and caves hidden in the canyons.
