McWayne Center: Hands on Learning
Photos of The McWayne Center
The McWayne Science Center has four floors with different hands on exhibits on each floor. Everything from aquariums to dinosaurs are located at this learning center. Each year new temporary exhibits are displayed for viewing and learning. Kids and adults will learn and laugh together throughout, I know I did with my kids. The science center is always have different displays so, that the science center is always changing and attracting different people. Adults come from all over to bring their children so that they can experience The McWayne Science Center.
The Science Center is located in Birmingham, Alabama. The McWayne Science Center has science demonstrations performed daily by professionals. They also have over forty (40) hands on exhibits for you to touch and learn about. It has over 9,000 feet of interactive exhibits. Many schools take field trips to The McWayne Science Center and it has been a great learning experience for students and teachers alike.
One of the most popular exhibits, is the World of Water. This exhibit, has over 50 species of marine and freshwater life. Marine life is usually hard to observe unless it is some type of habitat. Also, The McWayne Center, has the Alabama Collection Center which houses fossils and other artifacts from back in the dinosaur. This is a great place to view artifacts that can't be found anywhere else.
Then, from time to time throughout the calendar year different exhibits as well as different guests are featured. Sometimes scientists will actually speak at the learning center. It is an amazing experience to suck up all the knowledge from the experts especially in front of all these displays laid out.
There is no time limit as to how long you or your group can be at the science center and you should also visit the gift shop before leaving the center. They have several different souvenirs and the sales from the science center, go right back into the science center.
The Dinosaur Exhibit that is on display has the Fossils of three dinosaurs including the Alabama Tyrannosaur, the Armored Dinosaur and the Raptor. Also, the museum has several fossils of prehistoric birds and other ancients artifacts. One of the best Fossils is the 80 foot Whale Fossil called Basilosaurus cetoides.
For history and science buffs you have came to the right place. One nice thing, is that the exhibits that can be explored, have no limit as to how long you may stay at each station at the center. This way you can feel free to take your time and you do not have to rush through in thirty minutes or take your time and explore for hours and make a day out of it. The Science center has a Native American section that houses many artifacts and it even has a Space Learning center to teach everyone about Space. Sometimes experts from their respective fields will make appearances during the calendar year. It is truly astonishing the way they have this place set up. It is ever changing and they have high tech areas that I personally have never seen anywhere else but, at this museum and learning center.
I-Max and Aquarium
The I-Max Theater has two hundred and eighty seats. The I-Max has a five story tall screen and three tons of subwoofers and speakers. The screen covers the ceiling and all four walls around you and it makes you feel as though you were actually in the film.
The Aquarium is full of fish and other marine life that is second to none. There are descriptions at each animal's station explaining what each ocean dwelling animal is called. The sea life comes face to face with visitors at times.
Over fifty marine life animals are located in the tank area and on that side of the Science Center they also house The World of Water in which learning is more fun than playing. The actual sea life in the aquarium simply amazing and they seem to play in the water as you watch. Some of the sea life that you see at this place you may never visual see ever in your life time. The hall from the aquarium to the theater is adorned with pictures and facts about the aquarium. The I-Max occasionally has movies that are playing in the theaters across the country. If you have ever seen a movie on at an I-Max theater, it is an amazing experience. You start to feel like you are part of the movie. If you have not visited the I-Max Theater and Aquarium, this is a great place to visit.
