Midwest Vacations for Active Families

Updated on June 22, 2009

Vacations in the Midwest are becoming more and more popular as gas prices are making airfare difficult for many families. Luckily, there are plenty of attractions in the Midwest that are sure to give your family a memorable vacation, without stretching you beyond your budget.

Cache River, Illinois
Cache River State Natural area is located in southern Illinois inside a floodplain created by glacial floodwater of the Ohio River. The area is ideal for camping, boating, fishing, biking, and hiking and makes a great family vacation.

Theodore Roosevelt National Park
Theodore Roosevelt National Park is located in the badlands of western North Dakota and is one of the best places to visit in the Midwest. Towering buttes over the plateau, bison roaming, and antelope bounding are just some of the great sights you and your family will enjoy.

Mt. Rushmore
Mt. Rushmore Memorial, nestled in the Black Hills of South Dakota just outside Rapid City, offers the beauty of the mountain park and many animals and plants of the region. Visitors can take in interpretive programs offered, as well as spend some time among the exhibits.

Branson Family Vacation
In Branson, Missouri, you can commune with nature, visit big city museums, or take off on an adventure. If visiting an amusement park in the morning, having supper on the lake, and then catching a top notch musical show in the evening appeals to you, Branson will be your best Midwest vacation.

Biking Trails in Peoria, Illinois
If your travels take you to Peoria, Illinois this year, be sure to take advantage of the great biking trails, including No Baloney Cruise, Rock Island State Trail, Farmdale Recreation Area, Rock Island Trail, and Jubilee College State Park.

Crazy Horse Memorial
For a profound experience this year, take your family to the badlands of South Dakota to visit the stunning Crazy Horse Monument. Its mission is to honor the culture, tradition and living heritage of North American Indians.

Wilderness Vacation
A wilderness vacation could be the best possible choice for your family getaway. A natural setting is relaxing and gives you the opportunity to enjoy your surroundings without having to answer your e-mail or rush for the phone. Wilderness vacations vary in their level of “roughing it,” so you can choose the challenge that suits you best.

Any of these great attractions will give your family a relaxing and enjoyable vacation. No matter where you travel, you will also drive through our nation’s heartland and witness some of the spectacular vistas the Midwest has to offer.
