Monte Carlo Las Vegas

Monte Carlo Las Vegas is another MGM MIrage owned property (MGM MIrage owns the entire west side of the Las Vegas strip except for the Jockey Club, Caesars Palace, Stratosphere, and Treasure Island... which they did own but sold to Phil Ruffin for $775 million in late 2008. Project City Center, the huge "city on the strip", also belongs to MGM Mirage). Monte Carlo is also the only Las Vegas casino which is loosely based on ANOTHER casino (the Monte-Carlo in the Principality of Monaco) instead of relying on the usual tropical, geographic or historic themes.

Monte Carlo is the only Las Vegas strip resort that has its own brewery and brew pub. (Holy Cow was a brew pub which opened in 1993 on the northeast corner at the intersection of Sahara and Las Vegas Blvd., but they went out of business in 2002). I was a guest at the Monte Carlo in 2003 and can recommend their beer although at the time they would only serve 12 ounce glasses of it at the casino bar and Houdini lounge (a second casino bar set up in a room off the casino). In a city of three-foot long margaritas and all you can eat buffets, a casino with its own brewery that does not serve giant liter or quart sized mugs - or even pints - at the casino bar, does not make sense. The brew pub serves larger portions of beer, however.

While my room had a spectacular view of the MGM Grand you can see that the window is pretty small and the room is fairly plain and ordinary. Monte Carlo is like a no frills version of the Bellagio... it's elegant without being opulent about it. This is a great place to stay if you want to avoid the typical hyper frenetic atmosphere of the Las Vegas strip. It's a generic hotel and casino with no gimmicks like pirates or clowns, and you're unlikely to run into families with baby strollers.

In my opinion, Monte Carlo marks the point where the "south strip" starts to become "center strip." New York New York is to the south; directly to the north is a CVS Pharmacy (where you can buy convenience store style food and items), then Project City Center, Jockey Club, and Bellagio. Across the street you've got MGM Grand; the next three properties in line northbound are Planet Hollywood, Ballys and Paris. After that is the CENTER of the center strip, Caesars Palace and Flamingo. Monte Carlo is a good mid-range choice for business travelers and others who want to stay on the Las Vegas strip without diving headfirst into the nonstop party atmosphere.
