Moroleon, Guanajuato Mexico
Located deep in Central Mexico is an amazing city full of charm called Moroleon. The City of Moroleon, Guanajuato is under fifty thousand in population, one hour away from Morelia International Airport, four hours away from Mexico City, and a great place to spend some time. There is plenty of delicious food, shopping, activities, and warm weather to enjoy.
The clothing industry is very important in Moroleon and you can find plenty of shopping opportunities. On the northeast side of the city near Bodega Aurrera (Wal-Mart) there is an outdoor Shopping Mall called Plaza Textil. Around the Shopping Mall along the street there are a lot of stands selling women’s, men’s, and children’s clothes. The businesses are mostly clothing but you can also purchase lingerie, jewelry, groceries, DVDs, candy, and ice cream. On Colon Avenue you can travel northbound into the neighboring city of Uriangato with each side of the street providing an overwhelming amount of clothing options or travel southbound into downtown Moroleon.
The Templo del Senor de Esquipulitas is a beautiful, large church downtown Moroleon. Across the church is a park with benches people like to relax and socialize. Around the park there are vendors selling food, coffeeshops, and restaurants. Every year one mid-January night there is a large party downtown. There are Aztek dancers, a parade, vendors, and you are encouraged to celebrate until sunrise. Many, many people take bottles of alcohol to drink with them throughout the night. There are so many musicians playing music and available for hire escorting you home.
Bullfighting has a long tradition in Mexico and at the Plaza de Toros Moroleon you can experience it in all its glory. The bullfighters taunt the bull and with long blades they stab the bull around the neck. Once bull has been stabbed over four times the bull is killed. At the stadium vendors sell toys, hats, alcohol, and a variety of snacks.
The current gas shortage in Mexico has definitely had a negative impact on the country but nothing unmanageable. The City of Moroleon, Guanajuato is very pedestrian friendly and the weather is consistently over seventy degrees. There are long waits at gas stations when gas is available. Motorcycle ownership rates are high and the ratio over cars on the roads are sometimes are as high as four to one. Some streets are narrow, street lights are few, and silver bumps along with speedbumps help limit high speeds on the roads.
Moroleon, Guanajuato is definitely worth a visit if you intend on visiting Mexico. The weather is consistently warm but be prepared for an over twenty degree drop in temperature at night. There is a zoo on the far southside of the city and a nearby Cinema in Uriangato. Mexico is very affordable and 18 pesos is a dollar. Moroleon has a unique charm and is nicknamed el pueblo feliz (the happy town.)
