The 16th century Turkish Spa

The answer for an invigoratingly refreshing experience ended at the door step of Szechenyi Baths, thanks to a Co passenger in the aircraft who suggested this 16th century Turkish spa to address therapeutic degenerative joint pains. Located at City Park in Budapest, Hungary and said to be Europe’s largest bathing zone having a high degree of medicinal components. The sign board indicates two thermal springs at 740 C to 770 C supplies water with a significantly essential composition of calcium, magnesium, sulphate and bicarbonate coupled with fluoride acid. It is ideally the best place for post-orthopedic recuperation in this City of Spas.

I headed straight to one of the popular Turkish baths at the famed Szechenyi Baths. This imposing yellow building appeared deceptively to me at my first visit. The commemorative inscription informs that this magnificent complex covers an area of approximately 6,220 Sq. meters. It has steam chambers, 10-saunas and 18-pools, that cater to group thermal bathing section. The capital’s primary attraction receives many visitors from all over the world.

Over the centuries complete reconstruction of the swimming pools with water filtering and circulation units were added. With room for everyone the bathing suites separate for ladies and gents are equipped with high standard modern equipment. The curative natural pool complex has been used for centuries to ease various physical maladies. Each year its renovation continues for improvement, by partially closing different section due to heavy crowd.

We were informed that the water temperatures in different pools vary according to its depths and convenience of the people. Large fancy pools with facilities for massaging water beam and effervescent bathing spas see visitors flocking. A large group of men and women in an apron were seen relaxing in a medium sized thermal pool with the legs dangling in the water and apparently one of the popular spots that have a soothing temperature of 380 C.

It was a great experience at the Szechenyi Bath with water streaming in different temperatures containing the essential components in water as mentioned elsewhere in this note helps in curing chronic stomach ailments, subcutaneous fat, gastric ulcer, gall bladder and kidney ailments. The required amount of essential elements of the thermal water also answers calcium deficiencies in the bones.

At every point there are attendants for guidance. Before bracing for an energizing dip, I went around the various areas of the complex collecting briefs to ensure, by veteran visitors. There were many regulars who have been coming annually and there some first timers like me. There were families and friends who were enjoying the stimulating experience.

First I went for the popular a sitting thermal pool that has a water temperature of 38o C. It was very soothing to the tired legs after walking through the day. Tried out in different hot water pools with temperatures from 26o to 38 o C. The water temperature in all the pools and baths remain constant, we were told, but technically it may not be so. With so many people getting in and out of the people the water temperature may be gets condensed from the point of origination that could be at a boiling point.

The odor and whiff of essential minerals of thermal water in the pool was not inviting. In fact after some time we started abhorring after inhaling for a long time. On the first day, we were conducted around the complex by a guide, I moved in a set parameter from the following days. Looking at the constant floating crowd at the Szechenyi Baths I could not stop wondering whether so many people in the world suffer from rheumatism.

On the bright side of 60 felt like a youth after healthy soaks in these thermal pools. I have never come across a rejuvenating health centre anywhere else. I think like me, there may be many who may feel the same. I came across few senior citizens on the first day limping being helped by attendants to make them sit in the sitting thermal pool. But on my final day of my visit, I was surprised that they were walking independently.

During the course of the stay we seem to bump into some unknown faces exchanging smiles. Leaving this place was saddening and made me brood, similar sentiments were palpable.

It had been a great energizing experience at these restorative thermal pools. It is six months since visiting Hungary. I must admit unhesitatingly, apart from other places of interest including other traditional baths in the city, exploring Szechenyi Baths has been a wonderful experience altogether. My chronic arthritic complaint has not recurred. I wondered whether so many people around the world suffer from rheumatisms.
