Whodunnit?

Who doesn’t love a good mystery?

If you like role-playing as either a suspect working to cast suspicion on someone else or a detective using your reasoning skills to unmask the killer, murder mysteries are a fun-filled and interesting way to spend a weekend getaway.

From the gorgeous northeast to historic Kentucky to the languid south, here are 7 Bed and Breakfasts that are available to hone your methods of concealment and your sleuthing skills.

Springhill Winery & Plantation Bed ‘n Breakfast - Bloomfield, KY

Located in central Kentucky, Springhill Plantation (originally known as Anoatop) sits on a beautiful vineyard. Built in 1857, the plantation played a role in both the Civil War – where Confederate revolutionaries murdered John R. Jones, the original owner, in retribution for stopping the theft of an elaborate saddle by their captain – and the Underground Railroad assisting escaped slaves on their path to freedom.

They offer two options for murder mystery weekends.

Murder Mystery Option #1: Napa Valley, CA, is wine country. This murder mystery centers around the disappearance of wine magnate Barry Underwood five years previously, during the annual wine festival. When Barry’s body is discovered in the wine cellar following an earthquake, participants must search for clues to find out who killed Barry and why.

Murder Mystery Option #2: Cactus, Texas, is the home to the aptly-named Bubba’s Springhill Winery. Owner, Bubba Angus, a man not well-liked, is shot and killed in his office. As one of the suspects, you will have to fess up to the murder or find out who did it so you can clear your name.

The murder mystery weekends at Springhill Winery & Plantation Bed ‘n Breakfast are private parties that require groups of 8-12 and at least 4 room reservations. In addition to the cost of rooms, the cost per person is $50. Wine and dinner are not included.

Munro House Bed and Breakfast and Spa - Jonesville, MI

The Munro House Bed and Breakfast and Spa is not only the oldest house in Hilldale County, but it is also the first brick building to be erected. This Greek Revival mansion is pre-Civil War and was used as part of the Underground Railroad. It also has the distinction to be the oldest southern Michigan Bed and Breakfast that was originally built for and used as a private residence.

They offer a “Murder Mystery Dinner Party Bed and Breakfast Package” for a private murder mystery weekend. This package is over either one or two nights and includes a five-course meal served while the game is played. The cost for one night is $119, plus the cost of the room. Two nights is $169, plus the cost of the room.

Murder mysteries are available only on specific weekends, so please check their website for available dates. Please note: there is an 8-person minimum to book a murder mystery.

Cabernet Inn – North Conway, NH

The vintage Cabernet Inn is located in the White Mountain National forest, a fantastic retreat for nature lovers who love picturesque landscapes. Depending on the year, you can ski, golf, swim, rock climb or any number of other activities for the outdoorsy.

The murder mystery is ala Agatha Christie – you will spend three hours aboard a train that winds through the Mt. Washington Valley solving a mystery that centers around a wedding reception for a lucky bride and groom, whose beautiful day is shattered by the unthinkable. While onboard the train, you will be served a four-course meal that includes Lobster Bisque, Crawford Salad and a choice of Rib Eye, Chicken, or a vegetarian Stuffed Portabella Mushroom, and an assortment of pastries for desert.

The B&B Murder Mystery package includes two nights, a murder-mystery “swag bag”, champagne with the innkeepers, 2 tickets for the murder mystery train, cook-to-order breakfast each morning, and room taxes. Prices are per couple/per room and range from $459 - $699, depending on the room.

The murder mysteries occur only a couple of times a year, so check their website for dates and availability.

The Inn at the Shore – Belmar, NJ

If being seaside is more to your liking, check out The Inn at the Shore in Belmar, NJ. A short distance from the Jersey shore, this Victorian-themed inn offers a “Roman Ruins” murder mystery that takes place at both the inn and at various spots around town.

The murder mystery package ranges from $485 to $585, and includes a two-night stay, two breakfasts, two dinners, a welcome to the inn wine, cheese, and desert social, and the murder mystery. Prices do not include the 12% tax.

The murder mysteries run periodically throughout the year, so check their website for available dates.

Fuquay Mineral Spring Inn and Garden – Fuquay Varina, NC

Built in 1927 by the Cozart family, the inn was originally used as a private residence and hosted many a community function until the 1970s. This historic inn boasts Hemingway furniture and antiques and includes original artwork that ranges from an original oil painting of the United States’ 17th President, Andrew Johnson who hailed from Wake County, and a number of paintings and prints by renowned International Wildlife Artists (Terry Isaac and Robert Bateman, respectively). Also on display is baseball memorabilia concerning the Yankess of the 1940s and 1950s.

The murder mystery weekend takes place at the inn and local businesses. Malcolm Melee, owner of the prestigious Melee Vineyard – has been murdered and it’s up to the guests to ferret information from the available suspects to discover the murderer’s identity. From the Friday night social to the dinner party Saturday evening, you can work by yourself or with a team to unmask the killer before the last desert fork clatters to a plate. No special costumes are required.

This murder mystery runs periodically throughout the year, so check their website for dates, contact information, and pricing.

Harry Packer Mansion Inn – Jim Thorpe, PA

Built in 1874, the Harry Packer Mansion was built as a wedding gift to Harry Packer from his father, Asa, who was the founder of the Lehigh Valley Railroad and Lehigh University. It is also the model for Disney World’s Haunted Mansion.

The murder mystery is based on actual events and centers around the millions of dollars the Packer family has amassed and the heirs who hope to get their hands on it.

The Harry Packer Mansion Inn offers this murder mystery nearly every weekend and costs run $275 to $350 per person, not including 15% tax. The price includes a 2-night stay, breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, a formal dinner on Saturday night, and participation in the murder mystery. You can assume the role of a specific character or work as a detective to solve it.

The inn also offers a Weekday Team Building Murder Mystery for $100 plus the cost of a room if it’s applicable.

The Moore Farm House Bed and Breakfast – Conway, SC

The Moore Farm House Bed and Breakfast actually begins with F.G. Burroughs who began nearly penniless and used his entrepreneurial skills to amass a fortune. He owned nearly the whole of nearby Myrtle Beach at one time. The original house burnt down in 1914 and had to be re-built. Over the years, the house has been modernized and includes all the amenities expected from the modern traveler.

The murder mysteries they offer are by private arrangement and can accommodate 4 couples or 8 guests. The mystery begins with an introduction by James E. Moore, the owner of the original 1874 Moore Farm House, of the case and the characters involved. Starting with a wine and cheese social on Friday night, the mystery runs through Saturday evening when accusations are made and the sheriff unveils the actual killer.

The cost runs from $328 to $369 per couple and includes lodging for 2 nights, breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, the Friday night social, access to the house and grounds, and the murder mystery.

Check their website for dates and availability.

Hi petenali - I haven't done a murder mystery in a long time, but I think I'm going to splurge for my birthday next year. :-) I think doing them in correlation with a B&B is a fantastic idea - it's something interesting and different than the norm, anyway. :-) Thanks for the compliment and the vote up.

I have done a few murder-mystery parties in my time (and even hosted one) but had never heard of B&Bs doing them for guests staying there. That is an awesome idea. Might just have to check one out now. Interesting hub subject. Voted up!
