Museum of Contemporary Art

The Museum of Contemporary Art is in downtown Chicago, Illinois. The museum features a variety of contemporary art and exibits.

The museum features contemporary art, if you didn't guess by its name. Founded in 1967, one of its first directors was Jan van der Marck. Originally built as a temporary place for exhibitions, in 1974, the museum started to collect more permanent pieces of art.

Museum Exhibitions

Past Exhibitions

Within the first year after opening, the museum help two exhibitions, "Pictures to Be Read/Poetry To Be Seen" and "Class Oldenburg:Projects for Monuments."

In 1969, the museum was the site for Christo's first building wrap.

In 1970, the museum hosted shows for Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, and Andy Warhol, individual shows, of course.

The museum has also, hosted Antoni Tapias in 1977 and Frida Kahlo in 1978.

Other exhibitions that the museum has held includes Dan Flavin, Jeff Koons, and Robert Mapplethorpe.

Recent Exhibitions

The museum features a new exhibit every month in their New Artists/ New Work section. They, also, feature upcoming Chicago artists.

In 2006, the museum hosted Bruce Mau's, "Massive Change," which focuses on the social, political, and economic effects.

The museum has, also, recently hosted shows for Catherine Opie, Wolfgang Tillmans, and Chris Ware.

Museum Collections & Permanent Pieces

Currently, the Museum of Contemporary Art has about 2,345 different objects that feature 2,500 artist's books, to include Lee Bontecou and Robert Smithson.

  • Mike Kelley's "Craft Morphology Flow Chart"
  • Dennis Oppenheim's "Theme for a Major Hit"
  • Richard Tuttle's "Purple Octagonal"
  • Jackie Winsor's "Cheesecloth Piece"
