Nairobi City Park

Updated on May 12, 2016

Nairobi City Park

Situated just a few kilometers from the city centre, Nairobi City Park is a 60 hectare park rich in biodiversity. Its indigenous forest is a habitat of hundreds of species of flora and fauna.

Nairobi City Park, which was established in 1921 as a zoological garden before being turned into a public park in 1925, is located in the Parklands area in Westlands.

Nairobi City Park is Very Close to the City

The park being very close to the capital city is a favorite place for the city dwellers to spend a good time enjoying nature. It is a good place for family, group or even as a lone ranger (individual) to enjoy refreshing air. There are a number of entrances to the park most of them being footpaths heavily tramped on by hundreds of nature lovers who frequent the park. The busiest days when the park receives lots of visitors are weekends and during public holidays.

It is a Nice Recreational Place

It is on the glades (open recreational spaces) that you will find hundreds of people engaged in various activities. You will find some napping, others playing games as a family or a group. The favorite activity in the park is feeding, playing with and being photographed with the Sykes monkeys (easily recognized by their dark grey fur and a white collar of fur around their necks, a reason why they are also referred to as the white-throated monkey).

The Cercopithecus albogularis (their Binomial name) are so people friendly that they will even welcome you to the park. To be welcomed though, you must be carrying something that they can put in their mouth for instance fruits and cakes. If you carry your picnic food carelessly, it will be snatched from you with the speed of lightening, only to see the Sykes monkeys enjoying it on top of the trees.

You Should Have a Camera

You are supposed to carry your own camera, of course that is not a must. But you might need some remembrance photos. There are a number of paparazzi there doing good work making money with their instant photos (actually they call them less-than-three-minutes photos). The photos are reproduced as you wait using Epson printers.

Comfortable Clothing

Dressing mode should be like that of someone going for a hike, that means comfortable clothing so that you will be able to walk around and even play a game or two with ease. You can carry drinking water and snacks, but if you forget to carry, do not worry. There are food hawkers with all kinds of snacks at every corner you turn.

The Park Has The Following Areas That Can Interest You:-

  1. Open recreational areas where people congregate and enjoy themselves performing all kinds of activities.
  2. Indigenous forests where you can take a nature walk.
  3. Historical sites like the Murumbi Peace Memorial Park – where Joseph Murumbi, Kenya’s second vice president and his wife were buried.
  4. A war cemetery – where Pio Gama Pinto was buried. He was a journalist and politician. He was shot dead at a very close range.
  5. Gardens.
  6. Swings.
  7. Open air restaurant.

How to Access Nairobi City Park

The park can be accessed via Limuru road, Forest road and Muranga road. Of course you can also be dropped by a parachute if you have one. It is a good place to escape from the city’s hustles, noise and other kinds of pollution. There is no entrance fee charged.

Those with personal vehicles, the best road to use is Limuru road. I have been to Nairobi City Park several times and I can bet on it to be a good place worth spending some time there.
