New Jersey Tourism: Adventure Aquarium

Updated on October 20, 2011

Just a short drive from Philadelphia and major population centers in New York and New Jersey, Camden's Adventure Aquarium is a great day out for the whole family. The aquarium has over 200,000 square feet of exploring to do, divided into several sections for easy navigation.

There are approximately 8,500 animals that call the Adventure Aquarium home- from the humblest shrimp to the mightiest hippopotamus. The exhibits themselves are well designed to keep kids entertained. Everything is bright, colorful, and interactive. You can touch sharks, giant stingrays, and a host of other creatures like horseshoe crabs, lobsters, anemones, and starfish. The new stingray exhibit is particularly impressive- the critters range from tiny and adorable to huge and imposing. But no worries- they're all completely safe!

One of the big draws is the shark tunnel- a forty foot long tank full of sharks that visitors can walk right through. Ever wonder what it's like to come face to face with a giant shark? Adventure Aquarium's got you covered in spades. If you want to pay a bit extra, you can even go swimming with the beasts.

Expect to spend at least three hours touring through the various exhibits. Lunch is available from several vendors and a restaurant in the Aquarium itself. The food is about what you'd expect from a tourist attraction like this- a bit overpriced, but solid fare sure to go down well with the younger crowd. The Adventure Aquarium is also home to a 4D theater, so spare an hour or two to watch a movie or documentary like never before (the movie playing, as of writing this, features a "cheeseburger rain.") The gift shop is cunningly located before the exit, so good luck herding any children past those tantalizing souvenirs!

Employees are, in my experience, friendly and willing to help. Presenters during a show will answer every question with a smile and are generally knowledgeable on their topics.

All in all, I think the Adventure Aquarium is a great place for adults and children to visit. I've been there twice and will go again. While kids and grown ups alike can appreciate the beauty of the animals on display, kids will also be entertained by the many fun opportunities provided by the aquarium. You can tell there's a real effort to make the place as engaging as possible, and it works! So, if you're ever in the area, Camden's Adventure Aquarium is a must-see.

Thanks for leaving a comment! It is indeed a nice vacation/family attraction, if you're in the Philly area. I brought a good friend of mine from Seattle there and now she says the Seattle Aquarium has been ruined for her. :P Nothing beats petting a stingray!
