Ooty, The Queen of Hills - Tamil Nadu
In South India there are many beautiful hill stations to stay and enjoy during your vacation holidays, among those Ooty is the most beautiful one and proudly called as The Queen of Hills. It is lying on the folded mountains of high ranges in Western Ghats at an altitude of 2,250 meters from msl and it is also the junction point of Western and Eastern Ghats. Total area of Ooty is about 36 sq. km. It is the capital town of Nilgris District in Tamil Nadu. Ooty receives annual rainfall of 121 cm. There are many interesting places in Ooty. Every year thousands of tourists visit here from domestic and foreign countries. Before reaching Ooty we have to come across another hill station called Connoor which is also enjoyable hill station with many scenic spots. Some of the important places you must see in and around Ooty are Ooty Boat House Lake, Ooty Children's Park, Dodda Betta, OotyBotanical Garden, Avalanche and Pykara.
Though the name of the lake is Ooty Boat House Lake, the people called it as OotyLake. The British ruler called John Sullivan constructed this beautiful lake in the year 1823 -1825. Most of the places in and around the lake are covered by beautiful green woods, which is absolutely a treat to watch. It also has a boating house for hiring boats to enjoy boat riding in the lake.
Ooty Children's Park
At the eastern end of the lake lies the children's park. The children’s park is packed with different playing equipments and games for children to enjoy. It is one of the main attractions of Ooty especially for children.
Ooty Botanical Garden
This beautiful garden consists of a huge collection of flora and was constructed by Mr. McClover during the year 1857-1867. We can enjoy many varieties of beautiful flowers and cut plants which are maintained carefully. At the centre point of the park there is a glass house which contains hundreds of variety of rare plants and flowers. There are no words to describe the beauty of this wonderful park. There are many places inside the park to get some relaxation.
This is the name of the river which flows in the district. The old tribal peoples living there believe it as holy one and worshipping it. It would be a very beautiful sight to look at the river which flows along the grassy slope of the Nilgris Hills.
Avalanche is located at a distance of 25 km from Ooty. It is a wonderful place to visit, from the cliff of this place a dam called Canada Dam can be seen. A good experience of trekking can be had here.
This is the second highest peak of Western Ghats and the highest point of Ooty. In Nilgris plateau it runs north-south. The altitude of Dodda Betta is 2636 m from msl. There will be a telescope house located there to watch some adjacent points of Ooty.
The Climate of Ooty
April and May are only favorable months to enjoy the climate of Ooty. In summer days max. Temperature is 25 degree centigrade and min is 12 degree centigrade. But in winter days minimum temperature goes down to zero degrees centigrade. Ooty experiences heavy rains from two monsoon seasons. South-west monsoon starts on June first week and continues till the end of September month and North-East Monsoon starts on the first week of October and continues till the end of November. December, January, February is the peak season of winter.
The nearest air port is Coimbatore. All the people should not miss the traveling experience by train to Ooty which runs through many numbers of tunnels and amazing thick forests and cascades.
