Southern Heritage With An Urban Backdrop.

There are many things a person can do when they come to visit Atlanta. Of course corporate America has a major presence, there's the Georgia Aquarium, the King Center and for sports fans the Braves, Falcons, and Hawks seem to always have something going on. However, there is one destination that seems to be on just about everyones must see list and that is the world famous Oakland Cemetery which is not only the final resting place for many famous Americans who made their stand in Dixieland, but it is also a Victorian showplace with incredible sculptures, unique plants, flowers, and last but certainly not least crypts. mausoleums, and famous grave sites. I promise you this will not be an article about creepy ghost stories, but instead about a place with a fascinating history, and a beautiful urban backdrop. Oakland Cemetery is the final resting place for many of whom you may have heard.

Oakland is Much More Than A Cemetery

Oakland Cemetery sits on 48 acres of land near downtown Atlanta. Tourists are often surprised to learn that it serves as much more than a final resting place. Throughout the year it hosts events such as:

  • Victorian Street Festivals
  • Tunes From The Tombs
  • Night Time Halloween Tours
  • Run Like Hell-Pushing up Daisies 5k Run
  • Weekly Special Topic Tours

It has always been apparent the cemetery management has a sense of humor. The popular event "Tunes From The Tombs." is a day long music festival that allows local musicians to perform amongst Oakland's extraordinary monuments, mausoleums, and renown gardens. Because of it's wonderful architecture and sculptures Oakland Cemetery is often a gathering spot for local creative artists who come to take pictures, paint pictures and sometime produce short video clips and stories.

Beautiful Any Season Of The Year.

Thanks Sheila. Oakland is a fascinating place I think you will find it very interesting. Nothing spooky, or creepy about it. Enjoy.

I love visiting cemeteries of all kinds so if I'm ever in Atlanta, I'll definitely stop by this one and take a walk around. Unlike some people who think cemeteries are spooky even in the middle of the day, I find them very peaceful and relaxing. Thanks for the quick look at Oakland Cemetery.
