Ocean City Maryland

I am lucky to live in a small town in Delaware that is only three miles from the Atlantic Ocean and the North end of the wonderful resort town of Ocean City, Maryland. In winter the town is empty reminding one of the old ghost towns. Many of the businesses close until spring, but once late spring finds its way back around, the town literally comes alive with thousands of Ocean City fans who have been vacationing here for many generations and have waited all year to spend a week of fun, sun and relaxation in their favorite place. Thousands of senior graduates from all over make Ocean City a favorite "senior week" spot and many businesses start the season strong as the kids flock here to enjoy their first taste of graduation. For those wanting to vacation in a little less party atmosphere, it is recommended to plan your vacation outside of the weeks that seniors frequent the area. These weeks are generally in May and June. Known for it's clean beaches with good water quality, historical attractions as well as a three mile long boardwalk lined with amusements, shops and eating spots, there is no possibility of boredom. It is a vacation spot favored by even some of the rich and famous. It is also home to one of the largest yearly White Marlin Tournaments. Kids of all ages delight in jumping in and out of the waves as they wash ashore or simply walking along the shoreline and taking in all the sights and sounds the ocean brings with it. The little ones spend hours digging in the sand and building sand castles over and over as the waves come up and wash them away. Ocean City is also in close proximity of Assateague Island famous for it's home to hundreds of wild pony's that have brought visitors from all over the country to see. There are many attractions here that help make up the rich history of Ocean City, Maryland.

Trivia - The first hotel built in Ocean City was the Atlantic Hotel in 1875. Purchased later by Dr. Charles Purnell, it still remains in the Purnell family to this date. More history...

Dollies Candies - Opened on the boardwalk in 1910 and when you visit OC you must take home some famous Dollies salt water taffy. More history...

One of the oldest restaurants near the boardwalk and still feeding hungry guests is the Captian Bill Angler Restaurant, now just Angler, which was established in 1938. More history....

There are so many places of significance that I would like to mention in this hub but it will have to be in another hub at another time. Suffice it to say, Ocean City has lots to offer anyone looking for a great beach vacation. The eastern shore is known for the best blue crabs for taste. There are crab restuarants offering these mouth watering blue crabs all over Ocean City. This is a good guide for finding the best blue crabs in Ocean City.

Assateague State Park

Assateague State Park offers great camping options, whether it be tent camping or camping by RV, there are areas available right near or on the beach. Thousands make it a tradition to stay in the park as it offers a more rustic experience as well as a much up close and personal feeling of closeness to nature and the abundant wildlife present here. Bird watching is a great attraction at Assateague also due to the many species that may be found in these parts. In 1994, National Geographic Travel Magazine awarded Assateague as one of the Nation's top ten state parks.

Assateague State Park

If you are visiting and staying in Ocean City near the inlet, it is a nice easy drive to the National Park and is less than 10 miles away. It makes for a wonderful day trip and there are food and beverages available if you don't want to pack. There are also non motor boats that may be rented on the bay side.

Other Well Known Ocean City Attractions

Ocean City, Maryland has many well known attractions that have been around for many years. Visitors make these places a must to visit whenever they are vacationing here. Some of the more well known are:

Thrashers French Fries

Thrasers French Fries - a place where you will never go and not have to wait in a long line.

A brief history from the Thraser's Website

"In 1929, a Georgian known as Mr. J.T. Thrasher introduced a unique concept into the business community of Ocean City, Maryland. This creative Southerner proposed a food stand concession which would specialize in only one product: the noble French fry. Meeting with skepticism, Mr. THrasher, an extremely religios man, forged ahead with his fledgling enterprise. His idea? Simply to produce the best tasting French fry ever eaten - past, present or future. He did."

Fishers Popcorn

Fishers Popcorn - another popular, can't do without, boardwalk attraction. If my diet would allow, I could eat the warm buttery carmel popcorn as a daily staple. Based on the long lines on the boardwalk, many feel the same way.

A brief history from the Fisher's website

"Since 1937, the Fisher family has been popping popcorn on the Boardwalk and Talbot Street in downtown Ocean City, Maryland. You can enjoy the delicious popcorn all year round. Stop by the Talbot Street and Boardwalk location where you can inhale the sweet buttery aroma, watch the corn being popped, the caramel being made in the copper kettles and the coated popcorn being tossed into the case."

Trimpers Amusement Park

Trimpers Amusement Park has been a historic attraction in Ocean City for over 100 years offering thrilling rides and games for kids of all ages. Generations of families have each enjoyed time and memories spent at Trimpers.

A brief history from Trimper's website

Trimper's Amusement Park is historic partly in that it has remained in the same family for over 100 years.

Daniel B. Trimper and his wife, Margaret, grandparents of the current vice president and manager of the park (Granville Daniel Trimper) arrived in Ocean City in 1890. By 1893 they were owners of boardwalk property between South Division and South First Streets, including two hotels: The Eastern Shore and the Sea Bright.

Rebuilding the Sea Bright in 1900 following a severe storm, the Trimpers modeled the new structure on Great Britain's Windsor Castle. The two hotels together with a theater and an amusement park thus became known as Windsor Resort. A 1912 purchase also adds to the historic significance of Trimper's Rides. Read more history above.

Yearly White Marlin Open

Every August the White Marlin Tournement brings thousands of spectators to this event. The White Marlin Open came about by the huge storm of 1933 wherein the sand barrier that connected Ocean City to Assateague was severed creating access to the open ocean. Fishing in Ocean City was then changed forever and that is also when marlin sport fishing began. The yearly event offers large payouts to the winners which makes it all the more interesting and where competition is taken very seriously. Many plan their vacations in Ocean City to incorporate this great sporting event.

I hope you visit soon! September is my favorite month here. Still warm enough to swim and it is a much more quiet month. Everything is still open. If you can plan it during Sunfest, that's even better.
