Old Orchard Beach, located in the beautiful state of Maine, has to be one of the best vacation spots a true beach lover can go to. For a fun packed holiday Old Orchard offers not only fun in the sun, great restaurants, fabulous camping, cottages, house rentals, golf, nightly entertainment, surfing, fishing and beachcombing, but some of the friendliest people I have ever met. No matter what age you are you will find many fun actives to fill your time.

The Pier

The Pier at Old Orchard Beach has been constructed three times since 1898. The first pier that was built out of steel and had a casino and ballroom for 5,000 dancers. Between the first and second world war the Casino hosted acts such as Frank Sinatra, Benny Goodman, Guy Lombardo and Louis Armstrong. Due to several storms and a fire in 1969 the Pier has been modified. Unfortunately the Casino was demolished in 1970. The original pier was 1700 feet and the current pier is 500 feet that houses souvenir shops, places to get pizza, fries, hot dogs and cheese burgers. At the very end of the pier there is a night club.

Favorite Ocean Quotes

I find myself at the extremity of a long beach. How gladly does the spirit leap forth, and suddenly enlarge its sense of being to the full extent of the broad, blue, sunny deep! A greeting and an homage to the Sea! I descend over its margin, and dip my hand into the wave that meets me, and bathe my brow. That far-resounding roar is the Ocean's voice of welcome. His salt breath brings a blessing along with it. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, "Foot-prints on the Sea-shore"

The cure for anything is salt water - sweat, tears, or the sea. ~Isak Dinesen

On A Personal Note

Old Orchard Beach has always had a special place in my heart as far back as I can remember. This is where family members and myself would go every summer for a relaxing fun filled two week beach vacation. It was like a family reunion. For over fifty years now different family members have been making the trip from Montreal, Boston and Ontario. My uncle and my dad would go golfing almost every day and all the aunts, mothers and children would head down to the beach. At night we would have campfires, clam bakes and a great time. As a child my favorite place was the Palace Playland and the Pier. One of my favorite memories is getting up at 4 am to go seashell hunting (beach combing) with my dad.

I would recommend Old Orchard Beach for everyone that can make the trip.

This is a beautiful Hub. Looks amazing and I can really feel how you all love this wonderful place. And look at those happy fishermen.

I love Maine, used to have a barn in Damariscotta but never visited Old Orchard Beach. What a miss. it is an amazing state though and I yearn to revisit.

Good Changes. Parts are a little more modern because there is a nice hotel now, although too expensive for me! They kept a lot of the old too which I love especially the pier.

Visited OOB for years growing up as a child. Every summer for a week or two my parents would rent a cottage! Try to go back every couple of years now. It has changed over the last couple of years!

Melovy, I love O.O.B. So many great memories. My cousins still go there all the time. It was closer for me to go there when I lived in Montreal. What a small world, you being way over in Scotland :)

I just noticed this hub Susan, and had to take a trip down memory lane. We had a holiday in New England 8 years ago and spend several days at Orchard Beach. The girls were 4 and 6 at the time and loved the beach. One of my favourite photos from that trip is of them running on the beach on a very misty day. There was us and about 2 other people on the beach but we had a great time.

      Thanks for the hub.

Another excellent hub! This does look like a perfect vacation! I Do want to make the trio with the kids - and they will go anywhere if there's an ocean involved. Interesting history too! Benny Goodman is one of my favs:). He could really play the clarinet!
