Olney, Illinois is a unique town due to the fact that it is one of the few spots in the world where white squirrels can live. No one knows why this is so but I have heard theories ranging from the water to the Earth's magnetic field being just right. You can see these beautiful creatures at Olney City Park or scattered throughout the town. They are on the endangered species list so please drive careful to avoid running over one. These squirrels have been taken to other spots from Olney, but they seem to always die out. With these creatures being so rare, it is a must see on your visit Olney, Illinois. You can not buy a white squirrel but there are plenty of souvenirs available, from plaster cast white squirrels to post cards featuring these unique creatures.
East Fork Lake is the major lake in Olney. It covers approximately 1 and a half square mile and is a very good fishing area. Many very big fish have been caught out of this lake. They have regular bass tournaments, and there is also a lot of crappie, blue gill and catfish that are just waiting for you. This is a great place to take the whole family with an available campground. This place has electricity and a place to park your camping trailer. There is also a bait shop here where you can get bait, advise, and a lot of fish stories. There is also a nice boat dock with a playground and picnic area. If you like to fish, come to Olney and go home with many fish stories of your own.
If you are a long time golfer or just getting started, Olney, Illinois can get you smacking the ball around. They have mini-golf, a par three course, and a full size 18 holer. The mini-golf site is located just north of the city park. This is a great place to take the entire family. There are 18 challenging holes with many obstacles to putt through. The par 3 course is located north east of town and is great for getting the feel of real golf. There are 9 holes of par 3 with 2 holes being over water shots. The Richland Country Club is located north of Verneer Lake on Route 130 just north of town. The country club features a full 18 holes, a swimming pool, and a clubhouse with bar and available food. The only drawback to this is you have to be a member or a guest of a member to play. I'm sure many members will be glad to have you as their guest though. Come to Olney for your golfing adventure.
Olney is also home of 2 fine museums. The Carnegie Building is located at 401 East Main Street. There are many fascinating things in this museum. The Richland Heritage House is a museum located at 122 West Elm Street. The Heritage House is a collection of Richland County's past. Both of these museums have odd hours so call first to make sure when they are open.
While you are visiting Olney, Illinois you will probably want to get something to eat at a good price. Come to Kuhl's South 40 located at 423 South Whittle Avenue. The employees welcome you and the food is really good. You can get sandwiches, soups and chili, baked potatoes fixed different ways, many different types of fresh salads, their famous sloppy joe, and too many others too list. They even have ice cream made on the premises. They are open Monday thru Friday 10am to 5pm and on Saturdays 10am to 2pm. So come to Olney, see a white squirrel, catch a fish, play some golf, get some culture, and eat some food at Kuhl's or get it for the road.
