A Walking Tour of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California
Take a tour of Carmel-by-the-Sea
When I visit a place for the first time, I make it a practice to take a tour so I can get the "lay of the land".
The perfect beginning to a visit of Carmel, California is by going on "Carmel Walks!". This tour is 2 hours long and is led by someone who has a vast knowledge - and love - for this village by the sea. I made a reservation before I left on my planned vacation to Carmel. One leaves a message and is instructed that if you do not hear back, then you have a place on the tour. There are tours on Tuesday-Friday at 10AM; Saturdays, 10AM and 2PM. I my tour was on a Thursday morning in May. Be sure to wear good walking shoes and layered clothing. Remember, this is a WALKING tour.
I met the tour guide, Gael Gallagher, in the courtyard of the Pine Inn, one of the first hotels built in Carmel in 1902. She then proceeded to lead 7 of us on a zig-zaggy tour through beautiful courtyards and hidden passages of Carmel-by-the-Sea. She eloquently quoted Steinbeck and happily told us some juicy gossip that only a local might know. She also answered all of our questions like, "What is that flower?" or "Where does Clint Eastwood live now that he is no longer the mayor?" One of the gossipy things she told us was where the house is located that Mr. Eastwood owned when he WAS the mayor.
I had a thoroughly marvelous time! I think Gael did, too, as our tour ran over by 30 minutes. It was well worth the fee. Scroll down to see a few of the photos I took while on the tour of Carmel-by-the-Sea.
Please note: I took this walking tour of Carmel-by-the-Sea many years ago. I checked the link for "Carmel Walks" in July, 2018 and it still works!
