Ouro Preto; Historic Town and Former Capital of Minais Gerais, Brazil

Ouro Preto (means black gold) is a beautiful town in the mountains of Minais Gerais, Brazil. It is a town of cobble stone streets and beautiful churches and portuguese architecture tucked away in an idyllic mountain setting. Once a gold mining town, its primary industry is historic tourism. Prominent in the center of the town is the statue of a gentleman who was prominent in the freedom struggle that freed the state in the late 1700s. For a time the town served as the capital of the state but now serves its purpose as a site of history. It is listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO. A list of sites to see include Nossa Senhora de Cossa (church of our lady of mount carmel), Sao Francisco de Assis (church of St. Francis of Assisi), Nossa Senhora de Conceicao (church of the Immaculate Conception), Capela de Padre Faria (Father Faria's Church), Nossa Senhora das Merces (Our Lady of Mercy Church), Museu da Confidencia (Museum of the Independence Movement), Museu do Oratorio (Catholic Art Museum), Museu de Ciencia e Technica (Science and Technology Museum), Casa dos Contos (Museum inside a historical house), and Mina do Chico Rei (Mine of the Little King).

This town is also well known for its Carnival Party during Brazil's Carnival celebration that takes place in late February or early March. For those traveling to the World Cup in 2014, this is a small idyllic town that can serve as a great side trip away from the bustle of the craziness and crowds present in the key world cup cities. It is a few hour drive from the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil which is also one of the host cities in the world cup. I highly recommend that if you attend the World Cup, you set aside some time in your trip to take a side trip to this beautiful destination.
