Mercedes, Texas

I headed to Mercedes, Texas. It is ten miles West of Harlingen, Texas. Mercedes has a least two boot factories and to celebrate these factories. They have twenty-one, five-and-a-half feet tall, aluminum boots that are placed on the corners throughout the downtown business districts of Mercedes. The boots represent different Universities. The boots are painted the University colors and bear the Universities logos. I started the day playing “Hunt the Boots,” and concluded the day making sure there were plenty of good shopping malls.

Mercedes Chamber of Commerce

I headed to the Mercedes Chamber of Commerce, 417 S. Ohio, www.mercedeschamber.com. I arrived in town at lunch time. I spotted a boot across the street from the Chamber. When I went to take to picture. I was in the right place at the right time. For Alicia Aguilar, marketing director for Mercedes was walking by and took my picture with the Notre Dame “Fighting Irish” boot. I tried to add a little fight to my picture. It is the first picture on this blog. The Chamber provided me a flyer of the boots and a map of Mercedes. It was a balmy day and I was prepared to walk. I would walk to three boots, take pictures, go back to the car, move to a new location and repeat the process.

Hunt the Boots

This would be a great activity to do with children. An adult needs to be with them because it is close to the street and traffic. The boots are primarily located on Texas and Second streets, which is East-West and North-South streets of downtown. Play “Hunt the boots,” eat some lunch and enjoy being outdoors.

Botas de Mercedes Quiz

The next picture is the start of a quiz for the sports fan, Texans, and quiz lovers. I have a picture of twelve of the boots. You will need paper and a pencil for this quiz. Number the paper going down 1 to 12. View the picture looking for clues such as; University school colors, logos, and initials. Then process prior knowledge for clues. Then I have prepared another picture. This time it is the Universities mascots. This should give you some more clues. I have numbered the mascots to match the numbers of the boots. I mixed them up to present a little challenge. Now some of you will have identified all the Universities. I have a quiz at the end of the blog I would love to know how you scored. Your next assignment is to take the locations of the twelve boots and head to Mercedes. Find each boot, take a picture, find a great place to eat, and take in a little sun.
