Pendleton Scarecrow Contest 2016
Scarecrows Are Coming to Town!
It is a known fact that some very clever, creative people live in the Pendleton Area and you will certainly confirm that fact when you see the many Scarecrows this fall. Individuals, Organizations, Schools/Churches, and Businesses were busy erecting their creations between October 14 and noon on October 18th. The scarecrows will remain in place until November 7 so bring the family and enjoy strolling around our beautiful, historic town. It will be difficult to look at these fun scarecrows without smiling!
The 18th annual Fall Harvest Festival with over 100 vendors with crafts, food and more was a huge success with perfect fall weather on October 22. There was wonderful entertainment and old fashioned children's games, as well. Also, the upstairs of the Farmer's Hall was a place to visit because the Pendleton Farmers Society was up there sharing information about their important history.
In addition to the Fall Harvest Festival, the Pendleton Historic Foundation had Ashtabula Historic House on tour during the day and a Ghost Walk at 7 pm.
The Town of Pendleton and the Pendleton Area Business Council of the Clemson Area Chamber of Commerce worked together to make this the best year ever! There are 72 entries this year. You will actually see over 100 scarecrows since some of the displays have more than one scarecrow and since some folks put out scarecrows not in the contest.
People's Choice Awards and Artist Category
Thanks to the Clemson Area Chamber of Commerce there were new prizes this year and a new category. The new Category is Artists and anyone may enter that category but the one voted the best will receive a $500 prize and will be judged by a panel of judges. It will not be part of the People's Choice Awards.
There will also be $100 prizes for the winners in the Business, Group, Individual, and Church/School Categories - one prize per category. The winners will not only receive the prize money but they will proudly display a Winner Sign and of course earn the much coveted "Bragging Rights"!
Online voting began on Oct 20 and ended at 6 am on Oct 22. Voting continued at the Fall Harvest Festival with the winners announced at 4 pm. The voting booth closed at approximately 3 pm in order to have time to count the votes and combine the ballot totals to the online totals. It is very hard to decide on which one you like best because they are all so wonderful.
Congratulations to Pamela Latour and Debbie Bzdyl

How it all began
In 2012 when the Fall Harvest Festival Committee got together, Jo McConnell suggested we have a Scarecrow Contest to replace the Bubba Bake Off which was losing interest. The Bubba Bake Off was a success for a number of years and it replaced the Outhouse Race which was also successful for several years. It was now time for something new and Jo convinced the committee that this would work. Of course, anyone who knows Jo knows that whatever she is involved in is usually a big success due to her amazing creativity. She recruited the help of her dear husband, Pete, and together they made the first Pendleton Scarecrow Contest a great event to go along with our Fall Harvest Festival. Take a look below at some of the first scarecrows to come to Pendleton!

Not in the contest but want to decorate anyway?
If you enter the contest you are not allowed to use store bought scarecrow decorations like this. If you are not entering the contest and just want something fun for your yard or patio, this may just do the trick. It is water resistant so should hold up nicely.
This Harvest Decoration would go right along with our Scarecrow Theme and would bring a smile to passersby. It is colorful and festive looking.
