Pennsylvania Grand Canyon

The "Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania" begins just south of Ansonia, along Route US 6 and continues south for about 47 miles. At its deepest point, Pine Creek Gorge is 1,450 feet deep and nearly 1 mile wide. At Leonard Harrison and Colton Point State Parks, the depth of the canyon is about 800 feet and these parks have the most spectacular scenic overlooks. This area received national acclaim in 1968 when a 12 mile section of Pine Creek Gorge was designated as National Natural Landmark by the National Park Service.

If you were to see a photo of the northeastern United States taken from a satellite at night, you would notice a large black area in north central Pennsylvania...few people, few lights, few signs of 20th century civilization.  Most of this area is State Forest and State Gamelands.  It is breathtaking to view the beauty of the vast wilderness as it winds down through the canyon.  Plan your next outdoor experience in this area and you will find out for yourself why it is the Grand Canyon of Pa!!!

chspublish - It is worth visiting. It is about 2 hours from our home. The first time I went was on a day trip, now each year we camp about 20 minutes away and we make it a point to visit each year!!

I find this great for information about the natural 'grand canyon' of PA. though I usually visit some people further south in the state I must get them to go there with me the next time. Sounds a wonderful place.
