Pictures of St Maarten in the Caribbean

Updated on March 29, 2015

Photos of Sint Maarten on St Martin Island in the Caribbean

Sint Maarten is the Dutch nation on the southern part of the Caribbean island of St. Martin. The northern part of the island is Saint-Martin, which is a French Overseas Collective.

Sint Maarten is a popular cruise port, with cruise ships docking almost daily in the harbor at Philipsburg.

On this page, you'll find a little taste of this tiny Dutch nation located on the eastern edge of the Caribbean Sea. Browse some pictures from there, and read some interesting information about Sint Maarten. You may end up wanting to pay the place a visit.

My Favorite St. Maarten Poster

There are a few posters of Sint Maartin at Zazzle that you can put on your wall at home. You'll also find some lovely ones at AllPosters. Last year, I selected some of the best to show here, any of which can be printed poster stock or canvas. Readers then participated in a poll to choose the best by popular vote.

I'm happy to report that my own favorite was the clear winner. Called "Beach Restaurant Print," it's shown just below. Now, there's a brand new poll, with the previous winner, and five new entries. Some are available for purchase. Others are simply photos available for public use from various web sites.

See which one you like best this time. You can vote after you take a look at them.

Facts About St. Martin

St. Martin is one of the smallest islands that is shared by two nations. In the north is the French Collectivite de Saint-Martin, or Collectivity of St. Martin, occupying about 60% of the land mass, while in the south is the Dutch Country of Sint Maartin.

Sint Maartin, whose capital city is Philipsburg, is one of four countries in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The others are Aruba, Curacao, and The Netherlands.

The two official languages of Sint Maartin are Dutch and English, and the Dutch side is a popular tourist destination. The Princess Juliana Airport is one of the busiest in the Caribbean. Notice the marking for the airport runway on the map - it really is right at the water!

A somewhat popular tourist activity there is going to the beach at the end of the runway to watch the planes land and take off. The are so close overhead you feel you could touch them. Daredevils even 'ride the fence.' They hang onto the chain link fence, as the wind from a passing plane blows their bodies into a horizontal position. It's a thrilling, but not terribly safe, past time.

You can easily see on the map at the right that the Dutch share of the island is the smaller one, but it is also the more densely populated part.

There is insufficient naturally occurring fresh water on the island. But there's no need to take your own with you. Turn on the tap anywhere on the island, and fill you glass with desalinated sea water.

The country's official currency is the Netherlands Antillean guilder, but American dollars are widely accepted, especially in tourist zones.

Planes Coming in LOW over Maho Beach - and landing at SXM - Princess Juliana International Airport

If you're looking for a THRILL, head over to Maho Beach, on the Dutch side of St. Martin, where the approach to the islands main airport brings the planes in so low you'd swear they will knock you down.

Low in this case is REALLY LOW. They BARELY clear the 6' chain link fence separating the beach and the runway. Many times, cruise passengers will eagerly anticipate the arrival of their ship at St. Maarten so that they can go to Maho Beach for a swim and a few thrills. Thrills courtesy of airline pilots from around the world, en route to landing at Princess Juliana International Airport. (SXM)

In this video, see how these planes barely miss the beach on their way to the landing strip, which is literally just a few short feet away.

Bid on a St. Maarten Memory Today

eBay auctions can be exciting. It's like a treasure hunt. Sometimes you'll find something there that would hard as can be to find anywhere else. And often, you can get it for a song. Other times, that's not so true. See what St. Maartin souvenirs are up for bid today. Here's an example:

Shopping is Popular with Tourists

Tourism is a vital part of the economy. The island is a popular tourist destination, and many of them come there with shopping on their to do list. Some fly in to stay a few days, while thousands of others arrive every week for a single day's stay via cruise ships.

One reason why shopping is a popular tourist activity there is because the island of St. Martin is a duty-free port . Common purchases include locally produced arts & crafts, liquor, tobacco, leather goods, and, of course, jewelry. Discounted designer products are also very big sellers.

St. Thomas is St. Martin's Caribbean neighbor

St. Thomas, one of the U.S. Virgin Islands, is just a short distance across the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea from St. Martin. It's very convenient to visit both in one trip. In fact, most cruises that stop at Sint Maarten also visit St. Thomas

I've never been there nor have I ever been to Caribbean at all. Would love to go though. Small towns and islands like this one with their gorgeous surroundings are a true idea of vacation in my book :)

One of my hobbies is aviation photography ... I would LOOOVVEE to have a vacation at St. Maarten! They have the "big birds" there a lot (Boeing 747s, 767s, 777s, Airbus A330s, 340s ... not sure if the A380 has been ... or if it even could be ... there). We certainly don't have any airports in the US that allow anyone to get so NEAR the planes like they do here!!!

You have to go for a day sail aboard the tall ship Lord Sheffield when you get there. The captain is a very nice Canadian fellow and it's a fantastic day out.
