Resort Towns of the French Riviera

The French Riviera, a stretch of the Mediterranean coastline, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. There are a huge number of towns, and tourist development sprawls along this picturesque shore. Each of the resort towns of the French Riviera, however, have their own character, and it is important to choose the right one for the sort of holiday you are looking for. Here are some of the main resort towns you can choose from:


Le Lavandou


This is a small, old harbour town in the Western Riviera, surrounded by picturesque wooded coves and small sandy beaches. Whale watching and boat tours are a popular activity here and this is also a starting point for some lovely hikes in this area. From here you can explore the Port Cros National Park.


Saint-Tropez


Perhaps one of the best known of the Riviera resorts, this old port town with its historic centre, situated in a sheltered bay is a classically chic Mediterranean resort, a place where chic Parisians, jetsetters and rich celebrities come to see and be seen.


Sainte-Maxime


The beach here attracts many people each summer, but this mediaeval town is somewhat overlooked for its glamorous neighbour, Saint-Tropez. Unfortunately, this means that it is plagued by traffic jams caused by tourists heading through. Its picturesque setting is still very appealing however, and it is a popular resort in its own right. Let us hope that locals will succeed in their lobbying for a bypass.


Fréjus


This historic city dates from pre-Roman times, though its main attraction these days is its large marina and attendant yachty facilities. Historical sites are also in abundance here, including several Roman ruins.


Saint-Raphaël


This is a smaller resort than its neighbour Fréjus, though larger than anywhere else along the scenic coastal route between here and Miramar. The forests and hills come right down to the coast here, leaving little space for big development, and meaning that this stretch is perfect for a quieter holiday. The Esterel Hills here are wonderful for walking, and there are many delightful coves reached on foot from the coast road.


Cannes


One of the main cities of the French Riviera, Cannes is of course famous for the annual Film Festival, one of the biggest annual events in the movie world. Cannes is also a popular place for trade fairs and other big events. Of course if you intent to come for a bit of celebrity spotting during one of these big events you should book months in advance.



Juan Les Pins


This small but extremely chic and smart resort is popular with film stars and actors, and offers plenty of exciting night life and cocktail parties can continue until dawn.


Antibes


Antibes also has quite a buzz about it, though it retains its classic Riviera appeal and is a popular resort of long standing. There are many busy beaches nearby, an old town and classy marina. Antibes is also home to one of the best collections of Picasso paintings in France.


Cagnes sur Mer


This town has an historic core, a famous horse racing course and is close to the famous artists' village of Saint Paul de Vence, a must-see for art lovers with a range of museums and galleries.


Nice


Nice is very, very built up. It is a big city, so don't come here expecting a quaint fishing village and gorgeous unspoiled coastline. That said, this is a vibrant city and there is much to see and do.
