Review of Couples Swept Away Resort in Negril Jamaica

Updated on September 22, 2012

Are you considering a beach vacation with your significant other? There are many options available but not many can compare to Couples Swept Away in Negril, Jamaica. This all-inclusive resort for couples offers numerous amenities, an amazing beach, top-notch food and drinks, and friendly service. If you go, expect to forget about your life back home as you enjoy the sun, sand, ocean and activities. This resort offers complete relaxation at a price that won't break your vacation budget and it was named the number one all-inclusive resort in the Caribbean by Travel & Leisure Magazine. I enjoy it so much that I've been there four years in a row!

Getting to Couples Swept Away in Negril Jamaica

Couples Swept Away is located in Negril, Jamaica on the world famous seven mile beach, noted as one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean by Frommer's. Jamaica is located about 550 miles south of Miami Florida. It can be accessed via direct flights on Air Jamaica or other major carriers or connecting flights through Florida. I personally like Air Jamaica since they fly direct with reasonable rates and no extra charges for checked bags.

After flying into Montego Bay, you'll be greeted at the airport by personnel from Couples. They have a lounge at the airport where your bags will be tagged and rounded up to be put on a bus. You can then relax with a beer while you wait for the bus to leave. I've never waited more than 20 to 30 minutes before being whisked off to the bus for the complementary drive to Negril.

I have to say that the bus ride is probably the worst part of the trip but even that's not bad. You'll be on the bus for about an hour or so traveling mostly along the coastline and going through picturesque areas of rural Jamaica. It's a beautiful ride.

Once you arrive at the resort, you'll be ushered into the registration area where there are many comfortable sofas and chairs to sit in and ceiling fans that cool the open air rooms. You'll be offered a cool, damp washcloth to cool down and a welcome glass of champagne. Check-in is quick and easy. After about 10 minutes you'll be walked to your room by an employee who will also take your bags. It's all very easy and no tips are allowed.

Couples Swept Away Resort Activities

There's something for everyone at Couples Swept Away! If you love lounging on the beach with a good book or magazine, you'll love it even more here. Chaise lounges with floatable cushions are scattered along the beach as are double wide hammocks perfect for couples. And best of all, the resort offers beach side service for beverages. Just place your flag up in the sand when you need something. Periodically, staff also come around with cold, damp wash cloths and even pieces of fruit dipped in chocolate. There are plenty of palm trees if you prefer shade. The view from the beach is stunning, with the bright white sand and clear turquoise water. It's also relaxing thanks to the noticeable absence of children. When you get hot, you can take a dip in the ocean or float around on your cushion for awhile.

If you prefer a more active vacation, there's no shortage of things to do here. The resort has a fitness center with treadmills and extensive weight equipment, both free weights and machines. They also have an aerobics studio where classes like yoga and boot camp are offered. Tennis, racquetball, ping-pong, bocci ball, beach volleyball, and pool are other activities you can enjoy. They offer free tennis lessons with a pro if you need a brush up and they have clay courts. As for water activities, choose from sailing a hobie cat or sunfish, wind surfing, paddle boats, kayaks, water skiing, snorkling, and scuba diving, all included in the all-inclusive price.

There are several tours included as well with the best being the catamaran trip. Make a point to get your reservation in for this early as it fills up fast. The sailing catamaran will take you to Rick's Cafe, stopping to allow guests to slide off the boat and swim for awhile before returning. Sitting on the edge of the boat, drinking a rum cocktail and listening to Reggae music is relaxing and fun. The trip back to the resort is at sunset...absolutely beautiful!

Finally, there's an on-site spa. The massages, manicures, and other spa treatments are available at an extra cost but you may want to splurge. There's nothing as relaxing as a couples massage at Swept Away. The surroundings are serene and the scent of lemongrass permeates the air. It's a great way to unwind before dinner.

Live Entertainment at Couples Swept Away

Each evening, Couples Swept Away offers several options for live entertainment. In the Palms, there's a stage in the dining area so that you can enjoy dinner and live entertainment each evening. The agenda varies but I've found the talent to be pretty good at these shows. You can see anything from sultry jazz singers to fast-paced reggae music with dancers. And speaking of dancing, there is a dance floor in front of the stage so that you can join in if the urge strikes. The nightclub above Patois Patio also has live entertainment some nights or DJ's and a dance floor. There's also a piano bar that encourages guests to join in the show. My favorite evening of entertainment at the resort was the beach dinner and live show. A dinner was served right on the beach followed by a show that included a variety of acts, including acrobatics and singing.

Couples Swept Away Resort Dining

There are many options for dining at Couples Swept Away and there always seems to be somewhere to get a bite to eat, day and night. You won't go hungry! There are a few restaurants at the resort where reservations are recommended. These include Feathers, Lemongrass, and Patois Patio. The Palms is a buffet style restaurant for breakfast and lunch but serves a full-service dinner with salad bar buffet. On the beach, there are two restaurants, one on each end of the resort. Enjoy casual dining without going back to your room to change clothes to go to an indoor restaurant.

The food at the resort is excellent! There are traditional Jamaican foods on the menu as well as American and International favorites like Lobster, steak, Thai, seafood, and delicious desserts. Try to sample each restaurant if you can.

There are also beach bars located every hundred yards or so, including a swim-up bar. The drinks are top-notch too, including expensive liquors like Johnny Walker and imported beers. There are many excellent frozen drinks to try but my favorite is the Hummingbird.

When to Go to Couples Swept Away and Cost

If you're looking for a bargain, and who isn't, it's best to avoid peak season in the late winter and early spring. The best time to go to Couples Swept Away is in December or May when airfares are lower and the resort offers steep discounts. Rates for a couple during these dates start at just $259 per night. That includes the airport transfers, all food and beverages, all activities, tours, and of course, the wonderful beach. Airfare can be purchased for approximately $500-$600 round trip. The cost for a week at this resort for a couple is only about $1400 each. It may seem like a lot but when you factor in all the inclusions, it's a real bargain.

My recommendation is that you try this or one of the other Couples resorts on the island of Jamaica. It will be a romantic trip that you'll remember for a lifetime.
