A Description of the Park

This park is absolutely beautiful and I think of it as a well kept secret but, at the same time, the state of Alabama is blessed with so many state parks and waterways that it would take some internet research to learn about everything that Alabama has to offer. This particular park is open year round. I would advise going in the summer but, maybe not when it's too terribly hot. There's always the pool though, if you get too hot.

One of the things that I do remember about Rickwood is when you enter the park, on the right there's an Olympic size swimming pool. There's a diving board, if you dare. There is a life guard on site at the pool in the unfortunate case that there's accident at the pool. The pool is surrounded by the outdoors and is in partial shade and partial sun. The scenery around the pool is absolutely beautiful.

There's several picnic tables that are placed throughout the park. There is a snack bar is located at the park but you could also take this opportunity to pack your family cooler or picnic basket with sandwiches, food and drinks.

It is time to break out those picnic baskets I have a picnic basket that is supposed to resemble on of the old fashioned style picnic baskets and I love to use it. It comes with plates, utensils and cups. I also found a red and white picnic table cloth that I keep with the picnic basket to really set the mood for the picnic.

Several hiking trails are located in different areas on the three hundred sixty acre area. This is great to be able to get outside and get some exercise with your family.

The park has spelunking, a miniature train ride, panning for gold. There's even a campground area if you would like to stay overnight. It's a wonderful place to explore with friends and family to learn or just for the entertainment value.

When you pay for your tour of the cave, you are also located in the gift shop. Although it's not very big, you can get a momento of your visit here. While here I purchased an arrowhead and a magnet.

This is a great spot to bring the family and the kids for some outdoor fun. I have only been to Rickwood Caverns once but, I knew when we got there that we were going to have a great time. I love the outdoors and am somewhat of an adventurer so, the hiking trails and camp grounds are right up my alley.

This park is a great learning experience for kids and adults as well. It is a great place to visit to learn about caves and caverns. There are many stories that can be told about this cave and your tour guide who is very knowledgeable will guide you through and give you descriptions of different areas along the guided tour.

The Cavern

If you want, you can tour The Caverns. You then take a short walk through the woods, you will come upon a block building. After you pay for the tour of the caverns, you walk through another door. At this point, you can see artifacts that were found in the cave. These items are on display behind glass for everyone to see. You go through another door to get into the cave. It is really cool almost cold underground. I remember there being a lot of steps to go up and down and I was thinking if you have breathing problems, this would be hard to have a great time. A couple of things stick out about the underground world. There are fish that are blind that live in the cave. I remember seeing one of them on our tour. There's also and underground pool of water that runs throughout the caverns. There are several places that are very wet and slippery on the tour. Always follow the guide, listen to their instructions and be very careful.
