I know, it is a shame. I was up there that year and heard it on the news. It was something to see for sure. I wonder if I have any pictures of it? Now I have to check!

@Russell-D: Nice to see you Russell! That sounds like an awesome trip! I always wanted to hike Washington as I have driven up it a few times. The weather is very unpredictable! The last time I drove up was about 8-10 years ago and it was 95 degrees at the base. The summit was windy, chilly, yet nice...until the storm came in and visibility was very low. It was about 38 degrees! Hiking Mount Washington is on my Bucket List! Thanks for the suggestion and for sharing your experience.

@chefsref: Nice to see you chefsref! You are lucky that you grew up in Franconia and the White Mountains. I envy you because I only got a week each year to enjoy the region! It is touristy but that is something I love about the place...but then again, I am a tourist! I am happy that this brought back some fond memories. Thank you for stopping by!

@bankscottage: Hello and thanks for stopping by! I hope that you do get to ride the train. I suggest taking a dinner train if you can but all the rides are fun and the views can't be matched! Thanks for another great comment! Thanks for the votes too. I appreciate it!

If you're going up Mt. Washington, hike up while you're young enough to enjoy the challenge, then cog rail down at no charge. I did it in my late teens and had a great day from starting to climb with the dawn light to taking the last train down. See the Flume, the notches, not only Crawford but Franconia and reward yourself with a lobster dinner. David Russell

I grew up in the White Mountains in Franconia but never did take the train ride. Guess I thought it was too touristy. The pica and vid bring back fond memories. Thanx

I've stayed at the Highland Center and have seen the train there and in Crawford Notch but have never found the time to ride it. After reading your Hub, I'll be sure and take a ride the next time I am in the area.

      Voted up and interesting.

This looks so cool. I vaguely remember it as a kid...I know I rode it. Nonetheless, voting this hub up, awesome, and useful!
