The 10 Best Hotels & Inns in Salem, MA

Updated on February 5, 2013

Where to Stay

In continuation of my Salem, MA Visitor Series, I have compiled a list of the top 10 places to stay when vacationing in the Witch City.  This list is comprised of a couple hotels, a few inns, and a handful of bed & breakfasts.

Feel free to check out my other hubs on this topic: the links are at the bottom of the page.

Happy Vacationing!

1. Hawthorne Hotel

The Hawthorne Hotel is probably the most well-known hotel in Salem. Located right in the downtown area, this hotel has 93 historic/antique-looking unique rooms, a four-room antique home available for rent, a fireplaced-Tavern, the award-winning Nathaniel's restaurant, and a beautiful room for wedding receptions and other functions. Rates range from $114 to $315 depending upon the season and the type of accommodations. Though you will not find much information on their website regarding the history of the hotel, most Salem residents do agree that the hotel is haunted (especially Room 325....stay there if you dare). According to the legends, someone supposedly jumped from a top floor window and committed suicide. The Hawthorne Hotel is located at 18 Washington Square West.

3. Morning Glory Bed & Breakfast

The Morning Glory Bed & Breakfast was rated the #1 B&B in Salem by TripAdvisor. This bed & breakfast is steps from Salem Harbor, The House of the Seven Gables, and the Salem Ferry. Being a very small, intimate B&B, this Inn only has three unique rooms and one suite. As an added bonus, this Inn also has a third-floor roof deck with beautiful ocean views and a pea stone garden patio nestled in an oasis of a babbling water fountain, hanging plants, bird houses and flowering trees. Definitely the place to stay if you want a more cozy, intimate, and quiet setting. Rates range from $125 to $240 depending upon the season and the type of accommodations. This Inn is open all year round. The Morning Glory Bed & Breakfast is located at 22 Hardy Street.

4. The Coach House Inn

The Coach House Inn is a Victorian mansion, built by a sea captain in 1879. Each room is colorful and bright and decorated with antique furnishings. However, this Inn is seasonal, only being open from May to November. The Coach House Inn is located at 284 Lafayette Street.

This hotel is located waterside right in the historic district, and has 86 luxurious rooms and suites, an indoor pool, fitness center, restaurant/bar, a large, modern room for functions. 8. Northey Street House Bed & Breakfast

This Inn was the "Best B&B" winner of the 2010, 2011, and 2012 Reader's Choice Awards in MA North Shore Magazine, and is also rated 5-stars on This historic house was built in 1809 for Nathaniel Appleton Jr., a cabinet-maker. Now completely renovated with modern amenities, the Inn has kept most of the original architecture of the historic home. Being another small, cozy Inn, there are only a few rooms to choose from. Rates range from $125 to $275 (or more) depending upon the season and the type of accommodations. This Inn is open all year round. Northey Street House B&B is located at 30 Northey Street.

9. Inn on Washington Square

This Inn is also located in the heart of downtown and only has a few rooms to choose from, making it another small, cozy, quiet and intimate stay.
