Updated on September 5, 2015

All Aboard These Magnificent Trains.

Traveling the world by train may seem like an adventure of the past, but many people prefer the scenic splendor that a train journey affords even today. Once upon a time, train journeys like the exotic Orient Express offered the romance of mystery and unrivaled luxury to travelers who desired more than to simply get from one destination to another. The following train journeys are reminiscent of the golden age of train travel, but they offer the modern conveniences associated with luxury travel in today’s world.

Venice Simplon Orient Express

While the original Orient Express began wafting travelers by train from Paris to Constantinople in 1883, today’s version of the majestic Orient began showcasing the illustrious capitals of Europe in 1982. Beginning in London and ending in Venice, the Venice Simplon Orient Express route includes many splendid stops such as Prague, Vienna, Budapest, and Krakow. Moreover, these spectacular destinations—and the glorious scenery in between them—are complemented by the luxurious Art Deco style of the cabins as well as world-class gourmet faire and unforgettable entertainment. This iconic train continues to be one of the world’s most fashionable modes of travel.

Trans-Siberian Railway

Riding the Trans-Siberian Railway is truly the excursion of a lifetime! From Vladivostok to Moscow and St. Petersburg, the train traverses through pristine Siberian scenery of the far-away East to the glittering cities of Western Russia. The entire journey constitutes nineteen days of unforgettable travel. Chefs create dramatic meals and the carriages are designed with comfort and elegance. Traveling six thousand miles through seven time zones aboard this train is one of the world’s ultimate journeys—a rail trip that is sure to captivate and delight.

Alaska’s Coastal Classic

Alaska is one of the world’s last truly wild places and the Coastal Classic rail journey carries passengers through the wild scenery of stunning wilderness. The journey is short, but spectacular. Travelers board in Anchorage and journey through the Kenai Mountains to reach their destination—Seward, Alaska. Glaciers, mountain tunnels, a river gorge, and magnificent wildlife like moose and bald eagles await travelers who board this spectacular train. Beluga whales have often been spotted from the train windows, making this one of the world’s most scenic journeys.

South Africa’s Blue Train

One of the world’s best-known luxury trains, the Blue Train is an elegant means to see the sites between Pretoria and Cape Town. The journey takes twenty-seven hours and treats passengers to a luxurious run filled with the incredible South African scenery. The train carriages have been designed to meet international standards of luxury; guests may choose deluxe or luxury suites that may include bathtubs or showers. The dining car accommodates forty-two passengers and is revered for its gourmet continental and African cuisine. Guests enjoy train stops that allow for vineyard wine tastings or a visit to the game reserves.

Spain’s Al-Andalus

With cars designed in the style of the 1920s, the Al-Andalus is a luxury train that courses through Southern Spain. The journey begins and ends in Seville and features stops at Cadiz, Cordoba, and Grenada. Passengers enjoy visits to UNESCO World Heritage Sites as well as performances of Flamenco. Stellar cuisine and an opulent five-night stay make this train journey a memorable one. The lounge cars also feature musical performances in their Art Deco settings.

The inland coastal scenery is spectacular and passengers enjoy their views from comfortable carriages. The train is famous for its cuisine that features fresh catches from the Great Barrier Reef. The journey covers 1,045 miles of breathtaking terrain.

While these are among the world’s most spectacular train journeys, there are many other fantastic journeys to consider. Other internationally famous train journeys include the Royal Canadian Pacific that runs through the Canadian Rockies, the Royal Scotsman (various routes in Great Britain, Scotland, and Wales), the Deccan Odyssey that traverses India, the Flam Railway that offers views of Norwegian fjords, and the Glacier Express that journeys through the Swiss Alps.

You are most welcome Marta Rocha, and thank you for the kind comment. That’s unfortunate, I'm surprised there are no South America rail journeys. I read about one named 'Serra Verde Express' in Curitiba Brazil, but I am not sure if it travels across the entire country. Though it is said to be the most spectacular and popular train experience ever. Perhaps even one of the best on the entire South America continent. I enjoy scenic train journeys every so often. It's a nice way to relax and experience the behind the scenes view from within a country. A Brazil train journey would be most spectacular experience ever.

Hi Jackie, Thanks! Train travel can be for the most pleasant experiences. If you have ever wanted to make an amazing journey by rail, I recommend anyone to try it at least once. Personally, I prefer intercontinental train rides, it's a fantastic travel experience. I've been on a few, and it really does seem like one steps into the past, when boarding any type of train ( I don't know why, but it does bring that feeling) . Thank you so much for stopping by and commenting, I really appreciate it. :)

This does look like a fantastic fun time. I had an aunt that use to take trains a lot when I was a child and I always wanted to do that and I really must. Very good write up and fantastic pictures.
