Syria's Assad: Eye Doctor Turned Hitler in Freedom Revolution

Updated on August 17, 2011

The Syrian people continue to struggle against the corrupt regime as they seek freedom. The regime is pulling all the stops, so to speak, to control the mounting rebellions that continue to surface despite ruthless attempts to suppress it. Syria has taken several pages out of the Iranian playbook to suppress and quell the growing boldness of the dissidents. Assad has claimed his tanks and artillery that pounds civilian areas they are purging Syria of criminal and terrorist activities. They seem to forget they are the same-creating terror among innocent people only wanting freedom of some sort. Maybe just a little more freedom than they currently have.

Now, Syria is going after Syrians who live abroad, claiming they are inciting those in Syria to rebell via Internet, cell phones etc. The Syrians tap and intercept the incoming communications from outside the country, with the help of Iran, finding out where the call originated and names. Since many family members still reside in Syria, the secret police then visit those members and beat them. The dissidents in the US and elsewhere are black listed within the Arab community being called, traitors, and are conspiring with Israel. Many Syrians living in the US and UK have been such targets of the Syrian embassy using the freedom in those countries to do their dirty work. One Syrian doctor upon returning to Syria from a medical conference in the US, was interrogated and beaten. He eventually died. The US State department has thus restricted the activities of the Syrian embassy to a 25 mile radius. Syrians in other parts of the globe may also be watched during peaceful demonstrations. Once those are identified by the Syrian secret police, the mukhabarat, a visit occurs to intimidate them.

On Monday, Aug. 15, Syria sent tanks and mechanized infantry into Homs, a town of 1.5 million inhabitants. Heavy shelling rings out as clouds of smoke rise over the city. The military attacks were mostly random to cause mayhem and to suppress. The US and Turkey, oddly, has given Assad until Aug. 27, to finish his dirty work before actions begin to occur. The action very well come from the Turkish military near the Syrian border that has already clashed with Syrian forces chasing and killing those fleeing across the border, which has come to tens of thousands. Turkey has clearly said they will not tolerate the killing of innocent civilians and is willing to enter Syria to create a buffer or safe area for refugees. In Latakia, Syrian tanks from two armor divisions continue to battle armed Palestinians and in Brussels, NATO and Turkey plan to send the rebels anti-tank weapons. Syrian protest leaders and army deserters have been training in the use of the new weapons with Turkish military officers at makeshift installations in Turkish bases near the Syrian border. Meanwhile, Russia continues to supply its old-time ally with weapons and parts for the Syrian army Soviet equipment.

How this five month old protest and fight for freedom ends remains debatable. Will Assad be assassinated? Will the whole affair become a regional war? Unlike Libya, the Syrian leader has strong support from the military and even though Assad is a trained eye doctor who thrived under freedom while living in the UK for many years, he has become a Hitler.
