Updated on September 12, 2009

Teardrop Trailers- A Lot Of Camper In A Small Package

The teardrop trailers are the smallest among the various recreation vehicles. Basically, they are mostly designed for individual camper or for a couple planning a road trip or an outdoor adventure with a smaller towing car. Because of their small size and lightweight, they will not need much fuel to tow. As a matter of fact, any kind of vehicles can easily tow these trailers. It is also simple and easy to set up or take down them, being suitable travel companion.

These small recreation vehicle wonders are named from their teardrop like design. However, don’t let their size fool you in any way. The interior of the trailer is equipped with a bed for two. It has plenty of space for a comfortable kitchen area where the cook might easily all the meals that turns camping into a lovely outdoor experience. Depending on the selected model, the rooms might include kitchen cabinets, countertop, stainless steel sink as well as halogen lights or AC outlets.

History Of The Teardrop Camper Trailer

The teardrop camping trailers are usually 4 feet wide, around 8 feet long and 4 feet high. The bigger ones are around 6 feet wide, 5 feet high and around 12 feet long. Normally, the wheels and tires of the model are outside the body being confined by fenders. In most cases, at the bigger models the wheel and the axle is built-in into the trailer’s inside chassis.

The small size trailers began appearing in various camping sites in the United States around the 1930s. Following the 2nd World War, the superior road conditions and the appeal of the American soldiers back from war to travel across the country, determined a real explosion of campers and trailers like the above mentioned small sized RVs. As they are extremely suitable, these trailers become popular in other countries too where camping is a regular outdoor activity. Currently there are several specialized producers building teardrop trailers. Even more, if you are skilled enough there are do it yourself kits to build your very own teardrop trailer.

Don’t worry if you are not comfortable working with tools, as there are several small companies manufacturing these small trailers. Even big companies like Airstream that are manufacturing various RV’s find the production of these teardrop campers feasible. Nevertheless, these RVs are not promoted as much and as intensely as the bigger and much expensive models that are highly advertised and marketed.
