Many of these visitors are tourists who are combining the visit with Shakespeare's birthplace at Stratford-Upon-Avon, or with a visit to Coventry and the land of the notorious Lady Godiva. Warwick Castle is an extensive castle in Warwickshire in the North of England, near the important town of Warwick. This beautiful castle with it's bloody and treacherous past, was once the family seat of the Earls of Warwick.
There are many exciting rooms and attractions in the castle. Many state rooms have mannequins in them to bring the historical use of the castle to life. They look like real residents and visitors and are dressed in authentic period costume. They show how various workers, royalty and servants would have lived in the spooky old castle hundreds and hundreds of years ago. Warwick Castle has a great dungeon which has now recently opened as a scary torture chamber exhibit and has lots of spooky features including a gibbet hanging from the ceiling!.
One area of the castle is reputed to be haunted by the ghosts of ancient visitors and residents. There are exciting historical shows to watch including one where actors play the parts of a ghost and the servant who was accused of murdering him in a scary drama called the "Spook Experience". Special effects add to the weird atmosphere including music, sound and lights.
For a breath of fresh air after the unhealthy dank and miserable atmosphere of the dungeons, you can take the fresh country air of the catle wall walk which is quite exciting as it is very high up indeed.. The castle walls are very historic and can be easily explored. You can see the hideouts where the soldiers guarded the castle and spied out for enemies. A very long, steep and challenging flight of stairs leads to the high point of Warwick Castle where the flag flies on a real flag pole.
The paintings at Warwick Castle are well worth a look. Portraits of the English Kings, Queens and various members of royalty are on display. You can even view the privy chambers and bedrooms, where important family and guests got a good night's sleep, safe in the knowledge that they were well guarded by their guards in the fortress outside. Then, as now, Warwick Castle was probably the best castle to visit in England - because it was the safest with it's high walls!
