The Dolder Grand Hotel in Zurich
During my visit to Zurich I had the opportunity to visit by car the area where the Dolder Hotel is located. The beautiful mountain forest that is located around Zurich, I visited it in the 31 December and the area was beautiful, with snow and a little bit of color from the trees. It is probably better during Spring, with all the green from the trees and flowers.
The Dolder is located in a mix of city suburbs and nature and it has a splendid view to the mountains, Zurich and the lake. Unfortunately when I went there it was a bit cloudy and the fog was concealing the view.
The History of the Dolder starts in 1897 when the construction started, since then it has hosted many famous guests, such as Winston Churchill, Thomas Mann and members of European royal families.
In 2008 the expansion construction finished and since then the Hotel maintains its capacity and appearance. Not only it offers a room to stay but it has also a Spa, Ballroom, Libraries and other facilities.

The hotel construction lasted for two years, from 1897 to 1899, and the initial goal was to be a Curhaus (Health Spa) with the Dolder Grand Hotel. It was supposed to be a place for relaxation and regeneration for the people living around, specially from the city of Zurich.
When it opened in 1899 it was already equipped with two lifts, a telephone and other equipment that was a novelty at the time.
In the beginning it was a seasonal hotel, but in 1924 it was decided that the hotel was going to be open throughout the years. It also opened a restaurant in the front of the Hotel with a marvelous view.
The 50th anniversary was celebrated in 1949, a post-war prosperity period for the Hotel and for the city of Zurich, home of the main Swiss banks, famous worldwide.
In 2001, after a change of the shareholders, a study about changes in the hotel architecture was started by Foster + Partners. The goal was to restore the historic main building of the Dolder in 1899.
In the summer of 2004 the Hotel is closed temporarily for works. The hotel suffered major modifications, having some annexes torn down and new building built around it.
It was only in Apris, 2008 that the Dolder Grand opened as it is now. If you visit it today you will see the main building restored as in 1899 and the two building around in equilibrium between the modern and the main building style.
You can check wherever you want, you will always find a great majority of people who loves the Hotel. Even with its high prices, the opinion is very good.
Usually the people that pay more also expect more, and it seems that in the Dolder Grand they are getting what they expected. At least from their opinions in Google, Facebook and Tripadvisor, the hotel is rated as one of the best, with great scores.
