A Grand Tradition

The Grand Hotel has been the hotel of choice of the locals as well as famous movie stars and government officials. The tradition began in the mid 1800s as a nearby resort a steam ferry away from Mobile for wealthy residents to summer. Today, locals still make time for a quick weekend getaway to the area. Locally, it is residential area of antebellum second homes along the bay with winding bike trails the entire long length of the Eastern Shore. Nearby is the quaint village of Fairhope, which was started as a single tax Utopian society with artists and free thinkers.

Classic Family Retreat

This hotel gives a lot of value for your money with plenty of extra activities included. There are activities for children as well as teens. The area is ultra safe and bikes and kayaks are available for free for up to an hour at a time. Miles of bike trails extend beyond the resort with plenty within as well too. A beautiful lake with lush landscaping is the centerpiece within ancient live oak trees. There are two pools with the main one featuring waterfalls and a slide. The other one is about .5 miles up the ride; hop on a free hotel van. The food is excellent, but pricey. Their Sunday Brunch is famous and not to be missed. A first class spa is available and make sure you ask for the Spa Trail Card so you can get 20% off services as well as other discounts. This card also works at the Battle House Hotel in Downtown Mobile if you want to try another spa in the big city.

Sunsets for the Soul

My favorite thing to do at the hotel is to go to Bucky's Bar which overlooks the bay and has inside tables as well as large firepit tables with comfy chairs. Grab a glass of wine and walk over to watch the sunset, sitting on one of the swings. It's good for the soul.

Ride to the Punta Clara Kitchen

Take a bike ride to the nearly 100 year old Punta Clara Candy Kitchen just South of the hotel. Daily there is a bike tour with a guide if you would like to go with them. One of the owners has been cooking divinity most of her life as she learned from her family.

Eat the Crab Cakes

One of the Alabama Dishes You Need to Eat Before You Die is the Grand Hotel Crab Cakes. Make sure you have a taste.

Table for Two

Reserve a special dinner for two at their outdoor table set nearby the chef's herb garden. You'll have a primo spot for the sunset and score romantic points with your wife.

Take Time for Yourself

In the 1800's, time was slower. At the Grand Hotel in Point Clear, time stands still. If you listen, you may hear the sound of Confederate soldiers giving orders on the grounds or the flick of a lady's fan from the 1880s. Take time for yourself to have a break Southern style.
