The History And The Famous Daredevils That Have Tempted The Challenge Of Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls USA is a location extremely rich in cultural heritage and its remarkable past. Stories go back to the daredevils who have attempted to take on the powerful falls by riding the falls and taking the plunge. There is a museum dedicated for visitors to marvel at and the primitive man made barrels used in their venture. There have been several daredevils that have tempted to conquer Niagara Falls. Both the American side and the Canadian side of the falls is a sight to behold. Niagara Falls is majestic and the power is staggering. Niagara Falls has the highest cascading rate of any waterfall in the world. Also, the torrent water that gushes over the vertical plummet of 165 feet thrust onto thousands of jagged boulders and rocks below. Awe inspiring Niagara Falls has lured in sightseers for hundreds of years. Many individuals wished for the possibility of immediate fame for performing death defining stunts while at the falls.

A man dove into the Niagara River the first time at 85 feet above the mighty falls, his name was Sam Patch. Later on the same year he tested fate again, this time at 130 feet. In the 1880”s Carlisle Graham who was a barrel maker was successful maneuvering through and over the pounding rapids. Actually, this is how the well-known connection began between Niagara Falls and barrels. All the survivors didn’t reach fame or become rich. In reality, it is currently considered a criminal offense to try a stunt not having a license. The fine is rather steep, $10,000 but this still has not deterred the thrill seekers to stop trying. Nevertheless, the Niagara Falls daredevils were the very first thrill seekers as well as adrenaline junkies.

Not every person who survived the Niagara Falls was an adventurer. A seven-year-old survived an accident involving a boat and was rescued by the Maid of the Mist boat. Another incident involved two men who also survived in 2009 and 2012. These risk takers deliberately plan the challenge of going over the falls with dreams of conquering the violent Niagara. Possibly it was captivating being the ultimate dare to live through a trip over the tremendous falls. There was no greater challenge than man or woman versus nature’s spectacular wonder.

The first person to make it over the falls was a 63 year old woman, Annie Taylor. Her creation was a pickle barrel on her birthday. There was only a couple of things that protected her from the thunder of Niagara was the barrel containing compressed air from a bicycle pump and what she called her lucky pillow. After the barrel was shut, with only a cork which separated her from the rushing river water, Ms. Taylor taken course lead her towards the American shore. After only 17 minutes she was pulled out from the pickle barrel. She was in great shape, with only a slight cut on her head.

Dave Munday holds the record of being the sole person to go over the falls 2 times. He was a thrill seeker being a skydiving instructor, helicopter as well as an aircraft pilot. So Munday yearned to attempt the challenge, His barrel was constructed from red aluminum. He became the ninth person to survive the falls on October 5th in 1985. He actually video- taped the entire trip. But he was slapped with a hefty fine amounting to $1,500.00 for his reckless actions. Munday’s second venture was August 26th, 1993, this time in a retrofitted diving bell. This time he was completely knocked unconscious by this thrust and tumble. Not long after he was rescued by the Maid of the Mist tour boat.

The intriguing information of Niagara Falls began more than an astonishing 12,000 years ago at the end of the ice age. At that time huge forceful floods of water were unleashed from the melting ice channeling into the Niagara River. The water descended over the edge. Eventually the impact of the water deteriorated the rock layers and this caused Niagara Falls to shift upstream reaching today’s location. With each passing year the structure continues with the yearly freezing and thawing of the infamous Niagara River also along with evolution and erosion. Remedial performance has been finished in order to preserve the falls.
