The Night Butterflies of Bali

Updated on July 7, 2014

The Night Butterflies of Bali

The Night Butterflies of Bali are prostitutes ...also known as the 'Kupu Kupu Malam'. They are the working girls, and boys of one of the most beautiful holiday destinations in the world...Bali, Indonesia.

Bali boasts some miles of white sand beaches, tropical islands, lush vegetation, interesting cultural attractions, unavoidable but fascinating religious practises and a mix of exotic cuisines and accommodation types to suit every pocket.

There is something for everyone in Bali. It can be exciting, relaxing, calm and wild. There is so much to do and see that most holidaymakers will be spoilt for choice. Every day can and will be filled with exciting adventure.

Making a comeback

Once a very popular destination it is now making a comeback after the bombings in Paddy's Pub and outside the Sari Club on Kuta beach in 2002. Confidence is returning. In today's world of international travel Bali is as safe as anywhere else and perhaps moreso.

Alone...away from home

Being away from home alone in an exotic location has always been a powerful aphrodisiac. When coupled with the relaxed atmosphere and beautiful, available friendly people the cocktail for romance has already been both shaken and stirred.

Kupu Kupu Malam

The 'Kupu Kupu Malam' are often described as 'looking like the girl next door'. This is because they are the girl next door. Working as a prostitute is not the choice of all but for some there is no alternative.

Missing the family

The monthly wage for a masseuse in Kuta may be only 700,000 Indonesian Rupiah (roughly £45.00) for a fourteen hour, seven day a week shift. Consider that many of these girls, and young men, may come from Java, Timor or Sulawesi. Like anybody they miss their families and family ties are strong. They are supporting their families on this tiny amount of money. The prospect of seeing their loved ones ever again remains a dim and distant hope.

In just one night working as a Kupu Kupu Malam these young people can earn as much as 200,000 Indonesian Rupiah. Enough to remove many worries.

The 'Kupu Kupu Malam' are the just honest, good hearted people, trying to subsidse their income. Some do very well and become 'professional'. Others work for a 'boyfriend' or freelance out of their place of work.
