Things to do in Australia - A Visit to the Otway Fly Treetop Walk

There are walks and walks. I have walked along beaches, in parks and city streets, the one walk that I dream of walking is the “Otway Fly Tree Top Walk.” It is situated in the magnificent Otway Ranges in Victoria, Australia.

The Otway Treetop Walk is located in the cool temperate rainforest of the Otway mountain ranges, 500 meters above sea level. This Treetop Walk is at the height of 25 meters above the forest floor. The entire walk is 600 meters long and takes about 45 minutes to one hour to complete.

The Otway Treetop Walk takes you through different layers of the rainforest vegetation. Starting from the ferns and bushes at the ground level up to the topmost tree canopy. This Treetop Walk is an amazing experience accompanied by the sounds of the forest, the pleasant smell, the breeze and the wondrous beauty of nature.

The Otway Treetop walk is the longest and the highest walk of its kind in the world. The highest point of the walk is the viewing platform at the spiral tower which is at the height of 45 meters. The canopy walkway is designed in such a way that it has a minimal impact on the rain forest.

The 600-meter long steel section is divided into lightweight trusses ranging from 24 meters to 40 meters in height. This, in turn, is supported by 12 towers.

As you take a walk, a guide explains what you are looking at making the experience all the more interesting. You can also spot native fauna and flora along the way.

Facts

  • the Otway Treetop Walk is made up of more than 120 tons of steel.
  • the structure was prefabricated in Launceston, Tasmania and then transported in eight-meter structures. These structures were then assembled on site using cranes.
  • the entire project took ten months to complete.
  • this structure can withstand winds up to 260 kilometers.
  • the 24-meter cantilever section can hold 28 tons of weight.

This walkway is open throughout the year from 9 am to 5 pm except on Christmas.

The other highlights of the Otway Treetop Walk are the - The Prehistoric Path and The Zip Line tour

The Prehistoric Path

The Otway Ranges have their origins in the Cretaceous period around 120 million years ago, a time when Australia was connected to Antarctica as a part of the Gondwanaland. Dinosaurs roamed in this ancient land. Fossil deposits of dinosaurs remain hidden in the Otway sandstone, even today.

The Prehistoric Path takes you back in time with amazing prehistoric dinosaurs.

The Otway Fly Zip Line Tour is another thrilling way to explore the rainforest. You zip and zoom from one station to the next throughout the rain forest, harnessed to a steel cable.

These stations are called “cloud stations” and are connected by tree platforms. Attached to these tree platforms are steel cables suspended 30 meters above the floor. The Otway Fly Zip Line Tour features nine “cloud stations.” The entire tour lasts for about 3-5 hours with experienced guides helping you.

You can also Abseil off the Otway Fly 30 meters above the ground beside the magnificent Mountain Ash.

After the excellent Otway experience, you can relax and enjoy at the Otway Café. If you are going to visit, book in advance and don’t miss out on any of the fun.

I think this is a walk I would love. The Prehistoric Park adds an interesting sideline. The Otway Fly Zip Line Tour is another thing. I would have to bypass it. It would be nice to someday go on this walk. Up and awesome.

I used to live in the Dandenong Ranges in Victoria but I did not know about the Otway Treetop Walk until now. I moved to the States in 1997 and I still get homesick for Australia. Now I have another reason to want to visit again (or just move back to the Land Down Under). I would love to do this walk! And I've never seen the Otway Ranges so that's another bucket list item.

That looks like a great place to visit. I love forests. I mostly see the dessert or wide areas without trees when shown Australia, nice to know there are still forest areas.

I remember a camping trip to the Otway's some 33 years ago when I lived in nearby Warrnambool. It was certainly a beautiful place then, seems like I have some catching up to do with this location as the Treetop Walk and Zip Fly Line sound awesome. Thank you for this informative hub, I have been wanting to get down to the Great Ocean Road, now I have more reasons to get there. My votes to you, Vellur!!
