The Perfect Girlfriend Weekend! Big City Shopping! Part One: New York!

Updated on February 27, 2010

Put on your sensible shoes girls…it is time for some big city power shopping! Have you been working too hard? Do you need a break? Forget about those all inclusive resorts and try something new for a change! Why not call a couple of your closet girlfriends and plan a fun filled weekend of shopping!? After all, nothing soothes a girl's soul like a little retail therapy! When you think of shopping? What city comes to mind first? I don't know about you, but the Big Apple pops into my head every single time! YES…it IS POSSIBLE to find decent accommodations that are also reasonably priced. It just takes time and a little thing called the internet! The world-wide-web is loaded with weekend get-away deals (New York City included). All you have to do is open your eyes and pack your bags!

Manhattan - Or as I like to call it: Fashion Central!

Ahhh, the heart of Manhattan….bright lights, big city and yes, lots of wonderful stores in which to spend your money! In order to make the most of your girlfriend shopping get-away, it would be wise to map out which stores you would like to go to. Of course, you can always throw caution to the wind, call a cab, and wing it! Why not!? Sounds like fun!

The BIGGIES we all know and LOVE!

If you LOVE big name designers…then Barneys is the department store for you. In Barney's you will be surrounded by Marc Jacobs, Prada, Jil Sander, Giorgio Armani, Manolo Blahnik, Fendi and of course, the wonderful Diane von Furstenberg…just to name a few. With racks and racks of clothing to sort through, you won't know where to start (but hey, that's what a power shopping get-away is all about!). If you are a bargain shopper then you MUST plan your get-away around Barney's Legendary Warehouse Sale (which is usually held in the month of February). You will find deals and steals around every corner! Other big name department stores that you absolutely MUST visit include Macys (be prepared to SHOP until you drop…the New York Macys is HUGE!), Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue, Henri Bendel and of course, Bloomingdales!

Boutique Anyone?

If small boutiques are more your style…no problem! Manhattan is full of trendy boutiques that have a style and flair all their own. The best boutiques are located in SoHo, NoLita, Greenwich Village, the East Village and the Meat Packing District. Confused? Don't know where to start…much less end? Don't worry; you can always go on a shopping tour! Shopping tours are some-what inexpensive and well organized. They are great for first time visitors who simply need a helping hand when it comes to navigating the streets of the Big Apple. Shopping tours are also wonderful as they provide you with special deals and discounts that independent shoppers are not privy to.

Who Doesn't LOVE a Discount!?

If you are a discount shopper (and who isn't) be sure to visit Filene's Basement and Loehmann's. Both are known for their deep discounts! If you are planning on a day of bargain hunting, be sure to clear your schedule as you will have RACKS and RACKS of clothing to sort through. Both Filene's Basement and Loehmann's are known for slashing prices on all types of merchandise including designer clothes, handbags, shoes and home goods. Again, you will need to clear your schedule as you will need a lot of time to sort through all of the merchandise as there is A LOT of it.  If flea markets are more your speed (I just love a good flea market) then plan a spring shopping trip (when the weather is warm) and hit the Hell's Kitchen Flea Market. Open air and free to the general public this flea market has a large mix of goods including antiques, art, vintage clothing, and much more!

Shopping is a lot of fun, especially if you turn it into a big city shopping girlfriend get-away! New York City is full of wonderful things to do and see. Once you have shopped until you can shop no-more, take a break and go on the Sex and the City tour. Or perhaps you and your friends would like to lunch at the Ivy or catch a show. No matter what you decide to do, the important thing is you are spending quality time with people you care about! So get out your suitcase, polish your sensible shoes…and start planning your super shopping excursion now! Have fun!

If you want to stay fit as you shop…don't forget to wear your Shape-Ups by LA Gear Fitness!
