Elba

Elba is the biggest of the Tuscan islands and the most frequently visited by foreign tourists. It offers a range of excellent hikes, a multitude of beaches both sandy and stony, and many historic sites dotted throughout the landscape and in the main towns and villages. Though the coast can get busy in peak season, the villages of the mountains and the interior will be quiet pretty much year round.

Giglio

Giglio is a paradise for nature lovers. It has unspoiled woodlands to walk through, serene coves, wonderful beaches, and some of the clearest waters in the Mediterranean, which are perfect for scuba diving, snorkeling or simply swimming. The pretty coloured port is the hub of the island, were amenities will be found. Be sure to visit the Castello, a mediaeval fortified town and sample the sweet found only on this island.

Capraia

Capraia is heaven for bird watchers, nature lovers and historians, and has a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere all its own. Far out in the Mediterranean, it has a small pretty port and an historic village centred around a castle from the 16thCentury, but other than that it is an island of unspoiled nature, rugged and offering some spectacular views.

Montecristo

Montecristo is the subject of many tales and legends involving hidden pirate treasure, dragons and saints. Sadly, for those who wish to uncover its secrets and reveal its mysteries, Montecristo is not open for the public. Tourists cannot visit and the island is the preserve of conservationists and researchers. Perhaps it is the embargo on visitation that gives this legendary island such appeal.

Pianosa

There are no tourist facilities or hotels on this island, and you are not allowed to come to this island independently. Fortunately, you can visit the island if you sign up with an organised excursion or tour group. Visitor numbers are strictly monitored and no more than 250 people can visit the island each day, but this just serves to add to the beautiful unspoiled nature of this little island.

Gorgona

You may be surprised to learn that this Mediterranean idyll is a state prison! Of course this means that unless you have an invitation from one of the fifty inhabitants of the island then you are not going to be able to see it, unless of course you are sent there by the Ministry of Justice!

Giannutri

The small island of Giannutri is perfect for scuba diving. It has a long and fascinating human history. You can visit this island without a guide, but you will be restricted to walking only on the path from Cala Maestra to Cala Spalmatoio and back. This is to preserve the nature of the island. It should also be noted that you are not allowed to enter the Roman Villa. With a guide you will be allowed to explore some (but not all) of the rest of the island.
